Every Voice Should be Heard

Hillary believes the voices of Michigan voters deserve to be heard. To show her commitment to making sure that Michigan Democrats are represented in the primary election, Hillary made her way to the Great Lakes State this morning for a “Solutions for America” event in Detroit.

At the AFSCME Council 25 union hall in Detroit, Hillary told the audience:

This has been an incredible primary season so far. There’s been more passion and enthusiasm than anyone could have ever predicted. Democrats across the country are turning out in record numbers to have their say in this historic election. Here in Michigan, 600,000 people turned out on a cold and snowy day in January to cast your votes and you made it abundantly clear that you wanted your voices to be heard and your votes to be counted. In Florida, 1.7 million people did exactly the same. Now, these nearly 2.5 million Americans are in danger of being shut out of our democratic process. I think that is wrong and, frankly, it is un-American, and we cannot let that continue. My very first job in politics was working for the Democratic National Committee, going door-to-door, registering voters in Texas in 1972. I threw myself in to that hard work because I believed then, as I believe now, that every American has a right to be part of our great democracy.

Every voice should have the chance to be heard and every vote counted. This goes way beyond this election and it goes way beyond who's running, because no matter where you were born, or how much money you were born into, no matter where you worship or the color of your skin, it is a bedrock American principle that we are all equal in the voting booth. For me, it has been a long struggle to get to the point where barriers were knocked down and doors opened and we still haven't completed that journey.

But it is the vote that has given voice to the voiceless and power to the powerless. It is through that vote that women, African American, Latinos and so many others have claimed their rights as full and equal citizens. We have made our laws more just and our society more fair. Each vote is a declaration of our dreams for our children and a reflection of our prayers for our nation's future. That is why generations of brave men and women marched and protested, risked and gave their lives for this right.

    • I wish I could have been there too but I live in the U.P.

      I did get to drive down to Green Bay, Wi and see her there though.  She is always awesome and brilliant!  I keep hoping that our votes in Michigan will count.  Votes count in a democracy, don't they?

      I had to teach a class for which people had flown in from California, so I couldn't go. I live in Dearborn, so not far from the rally. I sooooooo wanted to go!

      If we're not given a second primary, we really have to make sure Hillary wins every other state! (That way she can come back and campaign here in the fall!)

      Anyone seen the latest polls in NC? Hillary's closing in fast! I really think she can take both PA and NC! Yipppeeeeeee!

      It was awesome to go and see all of these people all come together to support Hillary. I went with a friend of mine, and we both agree the with Hillary we feel comfortable in knowing that she will do what needs tobe done. She cares, and she can make a change in our country for the better.

      I felt like a little kid becuase I got to shake her hand and she signed my Hillary sign. It was a great thing to be able to go and really get to see her.

      People say that Obama is such a great speaker- well he may be, but so is our girl!!!! She is what we need!!!

    Revotes

    As much as I have worked and promoted Hillary I can't agree with a revote. The rules were agreed upon and you can not go back. Would I love for the votes to count and have the delegats seated for my candidate without a doubt. Something will be done by the party prior to the convention,else all will be lost in November. Lets get together and work this out. We are the party of inclusion,we are the party of the common american. The true democratic way will be realized. Hillary leys move on and win big in the keystone state,N.C, all the to Puerto Rico and on to the nomination.

      The thing is the voters were not the ones responsible for they're states voting early, the officials are to blame for that. The voters should not have to pay for the officials mistakes. The funny thing is, the reason they wanted to have earlier primaries was so they're states could have more of a say in the nomination. It made no sense for the officials to still decide to move up the primary knowing the delegates wouldn't be counted. It defeated they're purpose in the first place.

      NH moved their primary up this year; Nevada was supposed to be second. So why were they not punished?

      I think that the first rule in democracy is that every vote should count. This rule should be put up first against any other rule of the Democratic party .I think it was wrong to do so in the first place if you want to be call the Democratic Party.
      They should have chose another way to punish the state involve maybe a fee or something esle but not the SUPREME rule in democracy . I am Canadian and I think you have to show the WORLD that you are truly a DEMOCRATIC nation otherwise dont try to implament democracy in other nation . The world is watching you know let show that you are truly a democratic nation and a democratic party.REVOTES

    CNN. com reports that 2 senatros from Floriday have a plan to sit delelgates...

    (CNN) -- Two Florida state senators presented a plan Wednesday to seat the state's delegates at the Democratic National Convention, hoping that Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will embrace their compromise.

    Florida Senate Democratic Leader Steven Geller and Sen. Jeremy Ring outlined a proposal to seat all the delegates at the convention in August.

    The plan recommends seating half of Florida's 210 delegates based on the results of the January 29 primary.

    The remaining delegates could be allocated in a number of ways, including evenly, proportionally based on the national popular vote (excluding Florida and Michigan) or proportionally based on the total national delegate count, also excluding Florida and Michigan.

    "I invite the campaigns to endorse our compromise to ensure victory in November," Ring said.

    • Poll: Major differences in candidates' qualities by CNN

      (CNN) -- While all three presidential candidates are locked in a dead heat in potential matchups, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll suggests voters see major differences in each of their personal qualities.

      But Obama is also the only candidate who a majority of Americans -- roughly 60 percent -- say does not have the right experience to be president, the poll showed.

      That number is significantly higher than the 38 percent who say Clinton isn't experienced enough and the 31 percent who say the same for McCain.

      The poll also indicates that the Democrats may have the advantage on the issues most important to voters. Well over 50 percent report Obama and Clinton agree with them on the important issues, but only 39 percent say the same about McCain.

      The poll showed that 65 percent of Americans view the Arizona senator as a strong and decisive leader, compared with 63 percent who say the same of Clinton and the 59 percent for Obama.

      Just over 70 percent say Obama has a clear vision, 69 percent say Clinton does, and 59 percent say the same for McCain.

      The poll surveyed 1,019 adult Americans on March 14-16 and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

        • Credibility around the world

          Thanks to our President we have lost most of our credibility around the world. Now with the DNC willing to disenfranchise millions of voters we will lose what respect and credibility we still have.
          We send representatives around the world to monitor their voting processes, and it turns out that they are needed right here in our own backyard.
          For instance: TEXAS CAUCUSES- Texas Democratic leaders refuse to have the signatures of the voters at the caucuses verified, even though we know that there were numerous infractions during the caucus proceedings.

          It is the democratic way and the american way that Mi and Fl should be heard.  Our founding fathers who began the voting process would be very upset that all the state's votes did not count for the primary.  That is how they started the process in the first place and who has a right to change it.

    SO RIGHT ABOUT SO WRONG

    Thank goodness there is one voice out there who will not give in on principle.  

    Folks I am so discouraged, disappointed, and just mad, that Dean and the rest will not allow FL and MI to vote.  I am one of those voices in FL that for the second time is getting the short end of that pointy stick.

    I am not liking it.  But, am so grateful that Hillary is continuing the conversation in the face of so many who want this to quietly go into the sunset.  Folks, this is why she should be our President.  She says what she means and means what she says, and then she takes action!  She doesn't give up, she doesn't give in.

    You gotta love that.

    Thanks Senator Clinton.  Keep it up and say it loud, cause they sure aren't listening to me!

    I am going to donate 100. x 2 for each time my vote hasn't counted.

    Latest polls show Hillary closing gaps and increasing leads...

    In NC BO was ahead but that is changing:

    End of Feb it was BO 54 to Clinton 38
    Today they are statistically tied 48-46

    PA our girl Hill is 51 BO 36

    In the US National  Gallup Hillary is 49 to 42, which gallup calls a significant lead!

    So my friends...she is gaining, she is fighting, and this ain't over yet!

    Michigan & Florida Votes

    I do not live in either of these states, but if I did and my state held an election, and I voted in that election, and my vote was then taken away, I would feel as if my Constitutional right to vote had been violated. I am not sure if this applies directly, but the 14th Amendament States: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States. I cannot believe that in the United States that the votes of people who voted in good faith are being denied.

    • Well, I live in Michigan and went out in the dead of winter to vote.......

      and that is exactly how I feel.  This is a democracy, count the votes of Florida and Michigan.

      Hillary has been fighting to get our votes counted but Sen. Obama doesn't want them to count and he doesn't want a revote.  This is an outrage!

    Michigan and Florida

    This may sound crazy but, I wonder if the way to show the DNC how serious people are about Michigan and Florida is to pick a day and time and everyone go to the capitals in the state they live in with signs that say count the votes. I am beginning to think nothing short of a large, nation wide, public display of support for voters in Florida and Michigan will be the only way to show the DNC how strongly people all over the country feel about not counting the people who took the time and the trouble to vote in Michigan and Florida.Just a thought, maybe not a good one, but it seems like the DNC is ignoring everything else that has been tried.

    With all the attention focused on Obama’s speech we need to really stick to the issues and make sure to reach as many voters in the upcoming states via calls, blogs, e-mails, etc. What Obama did not speak about is the economy, the war in Iraq, foreclosures and all the other issues that are affecting the voters of the upcoming states. We need to call these voters and let them know that Hillary is aware of their needs and inform them of her positions on these important issues. We need to discuss her blue print for the economy. People are aware that this race issue could be discussed until November and some voters would rather not have that discussion. What they want is discussions on what affects their family and environment. Hillary is the candidate to bring forward that change.

    Yes, this election is historic because of an AA candidate and a female. But both have their own discrimination that they have had to deal with. Most people understand the issues that have faced AA’s but over half of the voting public (women) have experienced discrimination also (the glass ceiling) Discrimination is discrimination. Most people regardless of race, gender, and income have their unfortunate stories. What we need to do is focus on the country as a whole. We need to fix our economy. We need to work on foreign affairs. We need to bring the parties together for solutions. We need better education and social programs. We need affordable health care. WE NEED A CANDIDATE WHO WE STAY THE COURSE AND WORK FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND PROVIDE A BETTER PLACE FOR ALL TO LIVE. That candidate is HILLARY CLINTON.

    Please do what you can. Make those calls. E-mail the media, radio shows, superdelegates. Thank those who have supported our candidate. Get the signs and Hillary gear into the public eye. Bring out the visibility, which stays in the voter’s mind. Continue to donate for much needed advertising. Volunteer whatever available time you have to canvass, attend speeches and help out in the campaign offices. Let’s send a message to American via PA that the time has come to recognize the stronger candidate.  We need a huge win in PA and close races and wins in the other states. We need to give our candidate the proper tools and numbers so she can present her case at the convention and to the superdelegates. They will see that Hillary Clinton is the real choice for the Democratic nominee.

    I do not understand why certain legislators have the right to say who can count and who cannot. I still believe Hillary will make the case in the convention that she is more electible in the general election than BO. Hillary is equiped for the trip to the White House! Let's goooooooooooooo!

      I'm a Nevada resident (grew up in Detroit) and I hope with all my heart that MI votes get counted.  There are 50 states in the U.S., not 48, and it would be and injustice to just ignore those people.

    Bill was in Ft Wayne Indiana a few days ago and packed the hall. 3700 people showed up, 2000 was the max. capacity. They let another 1700 go into another room and listen to his speech on audio even though they couldn't see him. This 3700 does not include the many people who left. Very good turnout!!

    Our Votes should COUNT!!

    I am a Florida Resident and I have looked forward to voting for Hillary for a very long time now, and I am very upset at the fact that our Delegates may not be sat at the convention.  I believe that Michigan and Florida should be sat at the convention, because its the right thing to do!  Our votes and voices should be heard!  Thank you Hillary for pressing this issue, and I also want to thank our Democratic Senator here Sen. Bill Nelson, Gov. Corzine of New Jersey, Gov. Rendell of Pennsylvania, and everyone else for their efforts in getting Michigan and Floridas Delegates seated at the convention.  Please Hillary, don't give up untill our voices are heard!  We all Love you Hillary, and I just have to say, your AWESOME!!

      Hillary's courage in continuing to fight for what is "right" is so admirable.  Her opponent is telling people that everyone matters, and yet doesn't walk the walk.  Talk is cheap.  Pretty speeches don't get things done.  I got a letter from the DNC today, asking for money.  I wrote back, "you will get a donation from me, when you seat the Florida and Michigan delegates at the convention, as they were voted in their states."  Let's keep hounding the DNC and superdelegates about the unfairness of this ridiculous situation.
      There is only one choice for the Presidency that makes sense-HILLARY CLINTON 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Hillary your presentation in Michigan was presented like no other person could do, EVER.
      I have not worked out of the home for over 20 years now, but when I did, all my bosses were males, and I felt as though I was voiceless.  You gave all those people in MI and FL a voice today.  It is criminal what is happening, and certainly Mr. Obama is not helping their cause any.
      You are such an incredible woman with so much determination, I simply can't find the words to express my thank you for all that you have done and are trying to do for our country.

    The Right To Vote

    The right to vote is the most precious of all, Hillary and you are standing up for it. Every vote must be counted, especially when those at fault were not the people but the bigwigs in Congress who were too stubborn to make the system work for their people. The people of Michigan and Florida should not pay for their mistakes. Let the votes be counted or let democracy ring.

    How can Barack Obama say that he is a movement, that he brings change, when he does not even give the people that chance to speak through their votes? How can the DNC use antiquated rules to diminish the most vital, constitutional right?

    These votes must be counted, Hillary, or this is not a true democracy. I've always been skeptical of this sort of party politics, where it often isn't the people's decision but the media's or the high-ups in smoke-filled rooms. But not this time. It's too important to let this chance slip away.

    We've listened to you, Hillary. Now it's your turn to make sure that every voice is heard, once and for all.

    MI Delegates

    I think the MI delegates should go as follows, Hillary should get her delegates with the % she won and Obama should get on half of uncommitted because John Edwards was still in the race and he should get the other half, then also, who is to say that uncommitted voted for Obama, they could have voted for Edwards.

    This should be talked about over and over again wherever Hillary goes.  It would be better for her to discuss his blocking the re-vote and how it would have given Michigan an opportunity to be in this process rather than talking about what happened in the past.  The past opens her open to attack but the future and the Obama's refusal to have a revote is paramount.

    Thank you so much for standing up for voters rights!  In this 2008 election year America for the first time has a national primary where all citizen in all 50 states plus protectorates have the right to vote for the there candidate of choice.  Because this now is a national primary that vote should now come with the same voter rights of any other national vote.   Those rights are to be protected by the constitution and the attorney general of the United States.  How can it be a party  only election when tax payers pay for the election and not the party. No matter which state or U.S. protectorate any of us live in each and every one of us has or had the opportunity to vote or caucus, even Florida and Michigan citizens.  Why is not the throwing out of votes of by the DNC not against the civil rights of these fellow citizens?

    Does anyone know what happens to the delegates that John Edwards won in Iowa and elsewhere? We might want to start writing and lobbying for those delegates too.

    Don't every give up on North Carolina!!!

    I am an independent, African American, professional who supports HILLARY in North Carolina.  Today, the PPP poll shows that Hillary is within 1% of Obama in NC.  North Carolina is a southern state that Sen. Clinton can definitely win just as she did in Tennessee and Arkansas.  I hope someone reads this and thinks about the various levels of effort the Clinton campaign has put into various states during this campaign.  For example, compare the efforts in Ohio, Texas, and California to the Clinton efforts in Wisconsin, Maryland, and Virginia.  I hope that the mistake is not made again to give up on ANY state by the Clinton campaign.  Let's face it - we cannot give up on NC like so many other states that have given Obama a lead in the delegate count throughout the south.  

    Since the Clinton campaign is doing so well in Pennsylvania, I believe that time is on our side to also spend quality time in Indiana and North Carolina.  You have to look ahead of the Pennsylvania primary because we need the delegates.  Every day and every moment does not have to be in Pennsylvania right now - there is still time for Pennsylvania.  

    Hillary, I believe that North Carolina is yours with a diligent OHIO-sized effort put forth and not a concession Wisconsin-sized effort.  North Carolinians are VERY skeptical of Sen. Obama and are taking another look at the solutions that you offer.  This explains your surge in my state.  However, it will not play well to your advantage if they feel that you are not giving enough attention to North Carolina by spending your time only in other states.  

    Please take this seriously and begin campaigning in NC this week.  I will be donating again tomorrow.

    Constitutional Right To Vote

    Bravo, Senator Clinton, for speaking on behalf of the citizens of Florida and Michigan.  My family and I have sent various emails on this issue to the DNC and signed the petion. I call upon all of your supporters to do the same.  We need Florida and Michigan votes to count in this primary and the general election.  Disenfranchising them is violating their Constitutional rights.

    I hope Senator Clinton is borne up by the obvious support

    I read the Senator's excellent speech about voting rights and the connection between that cause and the Michigan/Florida delegations being seated and heard. I see the photo of those in Detroit who welcomed the Senator. And I've also seen Senator Clinton operating on two hours sleep a night to make sure that every voice is heard. I hope that the support of people on this blog, and in Detroit today, and the people who have been donating lately (I've convinced a few to pitch in!) bolster Senator Clinton's energy and spirit. We cannot rest for her, but I hope our efforts help her stay refreshed!

    I am sure that when you email most organizations you get a confirmation that your email has been received. I have been emailing the DNC and eventually sent some physical mail. I have not gotten one confirmation. Are they getting any of our emails? Maybe they can not make a decision because our emails are not being received?

    Florida is NOT GIVING UP.......

    CNN is reporting that 2 Florida Senators is not giving up yet with the delegates.  Two Florida state senators presented a plan Wednesday to seat the state's delegates at the Democratic National Convention. Florida Senate Democratic Leader Steven Geller and Sen. Jeremy Ring outlined a proposal to seat all the delegates at the convention in August.

    The plan recommends seating half of Florida's 210 delegates based on the results of the January 29 primary.

    The remaining delegates could be allocated in a number of ways, including evenly, proportionally based on the national popular vote (excluding Florida and Michigan) or proportionally based on the total national delegate count, also excluding Florida and Michigan.

    FL & MI Votes

    Thank you Hillary.  My wife & I live in CA and are so very upset about the fact that the vote of the people will be dis-respected.  We have taken the position that we will not contribute to Democratic organizations that we have long supported including the DNC by advising them in writing if the delegates are not seated in the manner in which them were elected via the primaries.  We have issued letters to different groups such as the National Committee for an Effective Congress (NCEC at the following email: info@ncec.org)  

    Basically the content of our letters is similiar to the following:  

    I am very dismayed by the disenfranchisement of all our citizens that voted in Florida.  If you cannot work with the DNC to sit these delegates the way the people voted, regardless of the fact that they voted out of order according to a committee’s envisioned alignment, you are ignoring the people who spent their time and effort to go to the polls in support of the canidate to their liking.  They went to the polls to vote, with all candidates having their names on the ballot, and not one of the candidates campaigned in Florida.  No one was at an advantage or disadvantage at the time the voting occured.  

    Do not change the assignment of these delegates in any way that will make the voters across the country believe that maybe their vote might not matter, for the sake of our party in November.  

    As far as Michigan was concerned, people went to the polls with the understanding that a non-committed vote would be someone other than Hillary; therefore, she received the majority of the votes and all the other candidates, besides Dennis Kucinich, would have received the uncommitted.  Why not seat the delegates with that ratio as the guide.  Obama should not complain, since he would have more that way since some of the uncommitted would have gone to Edwards and others.

    Additionaly, it amazes me that we can get hung up on the two states holding their primary ahead of February 5th and YET WE CONDONE PEOPLE VOTING TWICE IN TEXAS by holding a caucus, where not all voters can possible be present, on the same day as the primary in which the people spoke for their candidate.  If the Florida and Michigan delegates are not to be seated per the primaries, than all the delegates that were earned as a result of the second voting at the caucus in Texas should not be seated.

    My wife and I are going to continue to contact all our representatives and organizations that we have ever been involved with to try an create a grass roots effort to spport this position.  We are going to contact every media organization form papers to television stations to see if we cannot help the cause.

    We need help.  Please write all the Democratic representatives whether they are yours or not.  Write your local stations and national papers and magazines.  Help Hillary now!

    I was coming home last night and a vacant building right down a major street where I live is a new Obama Headquarters.  He plans a visit here in Portland OR Tomorrow.  His campaign is worried already about Senator Clintons momentem so he is going to all these states way ahead of time.  What is interesting to me is that it does not seem to help him.  She is gaining fast, neck and neck right now.  Our primary isn't until MAY one would think he would be working PA looks like perhaps he is threwing in the towel on PA.  Senator Clinton keep going we are right with you here in OR.

    If your party has a strategy to win the nomination to the White House, after knowing what it's like under a Republican reign for 8 years, why penalize your own party just to complicate things during this crucial election process?
    The DNC makes their own rules, follows it, does not do much to fix it and meanwhile this is happening right in front of our eyes, the bar is raising on the other party because people are scratching their heads on the democrats.

    Hillary is the strongest candidate in this election. We just witnessed the failed judgements from other people. Hillary's judgement is at its best.
    Can't you see how much a fighter she's been? This is the hard work that people should take notice and not the media's negative attacks.

    It is an uphill climb for Hillary but atop rests a future of America that awaits her leadership to regain its prosperity.

    This race only matters when prayers are with it. I do, in my own quiet time, pray for Hillary.

    It is an uphill climb for Hillary but atop rests a future of America that awaits her leadership to regain its prosperity.

    This race only matters when prayers are with it. I do, in my own quiet time, pray for Hillary.

      Thank you for your prayers.  Hillary's candidacy turned me into a prayerful person since Super Tuesday.  This is the first thing I do in the morning and the last thing I do at night and also in times between, I can feel GOD's presence.  Despite all the chaos that is going on right, I know GOD has already a plan for her.     Our Next President

    I just donated another 15.44 to help our next President on her journey. Go Get 'Em, Hillary!

    Hillary just came to WV yesterday and my mom was soooo enthralled the whole time. She got Hillary's autograph--which a lot of folks did. Hillary took the time and signed so many signs and books and things. She really gave folks her attention.

    She spoke with the crowd in such an honest, "this is the state of our country and here's what we have to do together to get it right again" way, and she is SO INTELLIGENT on every issue.

    And, she looked absolutely lovely.

    So... GO 44!! YOU are the NEXT president. We just got a long road to travel, but you hang in there and we will send you strength.

    Its a very sad feeling to know that you don't matter and that your opinion has fallen on deaf ears. I am a Floridian without a voice..... again. Go Hillary! Please help us!

      Your voice and opinion count....

      Contribute whatever you can to Hillary's campaign and every time you contribute, write/email the DNC and tell them you have done so. And, remind them, you will never donate to them as long as they take your vote away and that of the Democratic candidates, only Hillary is fighting for you... THAT's why she gets your donations.

      Money talks with those guys. Let your dollars count as your vote. It doesn't have to be much... but as much as you can comfortably give.

      And keep those letters going to the DNC.

    The RIGHT TO VOTE

    Hillary-Mrs. Clinton your speech in Detroit was awesome and should empower us to work together for the best result-you are on track!I HOPE THE DNC COMES TO THIS AWARENESS...
    After all, we live in a democratic country. This is our opportunity to be patient, to be an example of every ones voice being heard through voting. We have become a hurry up society-this is my plea that all states will vote before the nominaton is decided. This is not about Hillary nor Obama, but our chance to demonstrate democracy by allowing all states to have a say in this historical moment. There is a higher power watching over this process, we need to follow our Constitution. Yes, we are proud to be a democracy-and true democrats!Stay focused-be strong Sr. O

    DNC


    The DNC just sent me mail asking me to renew my membership. I wrote back a note saying "no, unless the Florida & Michigan delegates are seated." Instead, I will donate the money I normally send to the DNC to Hillary's campaign!

    It will be tough without Michigan and Florida, but if Hillary can win convincingly in the upcoming primaries, I think she can make a case to the Super Delegates!
