Celebrating Women: A Note from Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll

by Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll
3/24/2008 9:57:20 AM

This entry is part of a series in celebration of Women's History Month. Catherine Baker Knoll is the first woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Progress has made it exciting.  Promise has made it inspiring.  Neglect has made it necessary.

For two centuries American women have played catch-up, a consequence of being overlooked and underestimated.

Now, we’re witnessing women emerging as business leaders, educators, physicians, attorneys, and public officials. And finally, after 43 male presidents of the United States, a woman is making a serious run at the White House.

That Hillary Clinton is a no-doubt-about-it contender to become America’s Commander-in-Chief is a credit to her talent and tenacity. It's also the natural outgrowth of a step-by-step determination by women throughout the nation that they want a slice of the pie they have been baking all these years.

When I endorsed Senator Clinton very early in her campaign, I did so not because she was a woman, but because she possessed an abundance of the characteristics for leadership that I know are recognized requirements for the leader of the free world.

Being keenly knowledgeable of how our government works bolstered her qualifications.

Being a successful senator from New York solidified her strength.

Being a woman put her in touch with the real problems of real people.

One of the prominent lessons of women’s history is that history itself does not wait around for those who are reluctant to make it.  It only bestows its blessings upon those willing to stand up and speak up.

Women’s history is being written faster now, in permanent print, not in invisible ink.  It’s being written all year around, not just in March.

Any reasonable review of the turning points of our time will reveal the presence of leaders who did something for the first time.  That’s why we salute Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Sally Ride, and Billie Jean King.

What they did in their time encourages us to believe we can do even more in ours.  They blazed a trail, never free of ridicule or immune from criticism, but a trail that had to be discovered with guideposts carefully installed for future generations to follow.

Regardless of one’s political leanings, all women will serve themselves well by admiring this latest trail to be explored, the uneven, untraveled road to the White House for a woman.  If Hillary Clinton makes that journey and becomes the long-awaited first woman to do so, it will be a clear case of women’s history happening right here in front of us.

This year, the real Women’s History month may not be in March, but in November.

    Simply Wonderful!

What a wonderful article written by Pennsylvania's very own first FEMALE Lt.Governor Catherine Baker Knoll.  You have and will continue to be a great Pennsylvanian leader and trailblazer.  You are an inspiration to all the women of Penna.  Thank you for your dedication and service to our great commonwealth and nation.

    More than a Woman

History will be made this Fall, not only for women, for all Americans, when we can all see past oursleves and do what is best for the entire nation. This will happen in Pennsylvania in four weeks, it will happen for America in November. We need a candidate who is electable and who will represent the best America has to offer. I am so excited about this process. Hang in there Hillary

    • Electability

Thank you Lt. Governor for a great endorsement. Lost in all the Clinton-bashing rhetoric of the Obama campaign is the fact that Senator Clinton deserves credit for her tenacity, courage, and hard work. I am supporting Senator Clinton because she is the only candidate on both sides of the aisle who has the courage to make the tough decisions. It disturbs me greatly that Senator Obama has a record of voting present on the tough issues. I don't think for one minute that Hillary will stand silent when the right to choice needs to be protected. In these tough economic times, we need a leader who can win in November and has the courage to make the tough decisions.

    THANKS!

Thank you for your wonderful recognition of all of the brave and trailblazing women of the past and for your continuing support for Senator Clinton today!

Your statement regarding the fact that these women were never free of ridicule or immune from criticism, still rings true today as many continue to try to convince her to "give up."

To use Helen Reddy's timeless phrase  "hear us roar, in numbers too big to ignore..."  ..."we've heard it all before.."

To the naysayers, I say, we stand by Hillary Clinton.  We're in it to win it!!

    Go Hillary!!

    thank you

Lt. Governor and all of the women that have posted messages they have been inspiring, motivational, and uplifting; we appreciate your loyalty to Hillary and her journey to bring peace and prosperity to America.

    Women's History Month -- NOVEMBER

Good morning!  What a great idea -- let's move Women's History Month to November with the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton as Commander-in-Chief!

I was a little down in the dumps after reading the New York Times (I really ought to go to THIS site before anywhere else) but reading "the prominent lesson of Women's History is that history itself DOES NOT wait around for those who are reluctant to make it" has really moved me this morning.  Hillary Must Not leave the race of her lifetime now as so many are calling for her to do.  She is NOT reluctant to make history and I admire her tenacity.

We're not giving up!  We can't relegate this country to the arbitrary leadership of a McCain or the inexperience of an Obama.  Only a woman can solve so many problems at once.  We know it all too well, we need a Multi-Tasker........... Go Hillary!

    by Hilary29 at 3/24/2008 10:50:55 AM

    Thank you Lt. Gov. Knoll

Thank you for those inspirational words and support for Hillary. I pray daily that she will be our next president.I LOVE THIS COUNTRY and it scares me greatly that many american people, particularly the delegates/superdelegates and DNC want to put our country in the hands of someone that is so inexperienced and without a plan for the future; another learn as we go president!! Again, thank you for all your services to this country.                                                                                                 Hillary, NEVER,EVER give up!! WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!

    Well said!!!

Very good post!! I loved reading it. The gender has played a huge role in world, it still does, but slowly there will be change!!! Being best at the job is not tided to the gender, but to who you are and how well you do your job, how committed you are to do your best, women can do that as well as men!!!

I would love to see the first female president of the U.S.A now, it´s about the time to select one who would do best at the White House, not the one who fit´s to the general picture of the president.

WAY TO GO HILARY, KEEP GOING STRONG!!!

    history in the making

We are truly witnessing history in the making.  Hillary is a trailblazer.  She amazes me with her courage and determination to continue to fight for this country in the face of severe criticism from all quarters.  In spite of all this she still stands up for us, all of us not just a select few.  No matter what happens I will hold Hillary in high regard.  I will remember her struggle and be thankful that she had the courage to take up the fight.
I am proud to support Hillary!

    Dropping out of race

I'm relieved to see that Senator Clinton and her campaign are not listening to the nay sayers suggesting she quit the race.  In February the tone was Clinton must win Texas & Ohio.  Senator Clinton was victorious in those 2 states. The must win states were won.  Here we are in March, and we're back to we have no chance.  Can someone explain to me if you win 2 key must win states that are necessary to stay in the race, then  within a few weeks suddenly go unnoticed and no longer seem to count towards what the popular voters are saying in the primaries.   It seems no matter the successes the Clinton campaign achieves, it never is enough. As for Governor Richardson's endorsement, he has not only disappointed Senator Clinton but also the majority of hispanic voters who have spoke out loud and clear that they are voting more now than ever before for Senator Clinton.
If anyone can bring not only the the Democratic Party together but also this nation it is Senator Clinton.

    Wonderful post

Lt. Governor Knoll's powerful words echo my sentiments exactly. Ladies, we are strong in numbers, let them hear us roar. We have been underestimated for too long. No longer must we stand on the sidelines being submissive and demure. Hillary has shown us that our futures are filled with endless possibilities.

Let's all follow Hillary's lead and speak our minds, stand up for ourselves, breeze through adversity with poise and dignity, and reach for the stars to pursue our dreams. Hillary has shown women all across the world the true meaning of strength and courage. Throughout life, her struggles and obstacles, have turned her into the remarkable woman she is today. Hillary did not let adversity bring her down. In fact, it did just the opposite, for it made her stronger, wiser, and even more determined.

We, as proud, beautiful women, owe Hillary a huge debt. We can repay her by making sure she becomes our next president. Our country and Hillary deserve it. Do it for Hillary!!

    Right on Lieutenant Governor Knoll!

This truly will make history for us all. I am a proud Hillary supporter, but it might seem unusual because I'm young and male, but she is the best qualified. Also, my father is a strong Hillary supporter[as are my mother and sister], but I wish more men supported her. She has defied certain expectations and come back. She will prevail.

Please I need some help-Jimmy Carter

Does anyone know any possible way we can contact Jimmy Carter? That would be the ultimate endorsement. I'm googling it right now and if you guys could help out that would be great. If we all contact him, send him vidoes, info, and recent poll numbers, maybe he will come out for Hillary. Once you find the contact info, it would be great if you could post it.

    THANKS!!!

I would like to that Gov. Ed Rendell. He has been great for Hillary. He really stood up to Richardson on an early talk show today. It was awesome!!!

End in sight / A long way to go

    Hi folks,
My subject matter kind of sounds like double talk but this is the way it is. With only 10 Primaries left (not counting MI & FL) we are into our sprint but there also is a long way to go and a lot of work we still need to do. TEAM HILLARY needs to stay alert and active during this pause in the primary schedule. Obama and the media are trying to make it sound as though the race is over because they are scared to death that Hillary is going to run the table with the remaining Primaries and put her in position to take front runner status. Keeping positive and on the talking points will continue to show how Hilllary, her supporters and her campaign focus in on the isssues. When they hear Hillary's plans and see how thought out they are people take a second listen. What we need to do is continue to give Hillary the resources she needs. These last few months are prime Hillary country and we will pervail in all the upcoming Primaries. When everyone sees how hugh her win in PA will be they will flock to her. An off the subject observation is if Obama has to spend so much time and energy getting Republicans to register as Democrats in PA to win what does that tell you about his support within the Democratic Core base. Hillary is winning with Democrats and last I looked that's the party we belong to. It's not the Republicrats. Contribute to Hillary to ensure her the resources to win. ROCK ON TEAM HILLARY.

by Gay Guy at 3/24/2008 7:24:33 PM

OUR TRIO OF WINS WILL LEAD US TO VICTORY!

You can count on this. If we win North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, we will win this nomination. I'm saying it right now, and trust me if we can win those three, I'm 100% sure we will win this thing. Bet on it.

    • HILLARY IS MY ONCE IN A LIFETIME LEADER

I amy not be a superdelegate but I am a super volunteer. I blog for Hillary, I contribute, I travel to other States, I make phone calls. Every day I do something to help Hillary.  She is the leader I have waited for. I am 31 years old and have never had a woman to look up to. I have always looked up to men. Please get your brothers your father's and your husbands to help on this campaign. We need them and Hillary is a once in a lifetime candidate. We are so lucky to have such a smart, strong, savvy, hard working, compassionate leader running.  We are lucky because not only is she the most experienced candidate but we have the opportunity to put someone in the White House that will have potentially more experience then anyone ever elected when you consider she will be bringing Bill Clinton and her whole team of advisors who know the economy, the military and all the issues. This race is really a no brainer. HILLARY CLINTON IS OUR ONLY HOPE FOR REAL CHANGE. PLEASE GET A FRIEND TO CONTRIBUTE 10 dollars.  Call the states left where you know people. Volunteer in the states write the superdelegates, write letters to the editors. GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED. We need to do this for the sake of our country and our future stability!

    REMEMBER THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION???

DEMOCRATS CRIED OUT THAT THE POPULAR VOTES SHOULD WIN!!!  THAT SAME PRINCIPLE MUST APPLY IN THIS ELECTION WITHIN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!!!

THE SUPERDELEGATES ARE NOT RUBBER STAMPS!!!  THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE, REASONABLE AND RATIONAL PEOPLE WHO CAN THINK FOR THEMSELVES, TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTION AND DO THE RIGHT THING IN OUR DEMOCRACY BY GOING BY THE “WILL OF THE PEOPLE,” THE “POPULAR VOTES,” RATHER THAN BY PARTY "RULES"!!!

ALSO REMEMBER THAT BILL CLINTON DID NOT GET ALL HIS DELEGATES UNTIL JUNE!!!

HILLARY CLINTON WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!  WE WILL PREVAIL!!!

Wow! Thank you for your wonderful post! Hillary does bring out the best in people. What inspires me to support her is her courage to go against the odds, the nay sayers and pundits that continously count her out and she ALWAYS proves them wrong. She is a fighter!

TRULY A ONCE IN A LIFETIME CANDIDATE!!!!!

    THANK YOU HILLARY!

I just donated $10.00 to Hillary

First of all, I am a man who has never felt for one minute that a woman can't handle a job like the presidency. That is just, well you know, bunk. Hillary is a very smart woman and is up to date on all of the issues facing a struggling economy, the mortgage crisis, middle class, energy crisis, green new jobs for many of the states under stress right now. I don't have a great amount of money, but my $10 investment in Hillary is an investment towards bringing back the America that we all remember when peace, prosperity and a surplus were words we used quite a bit in the 90s. GO HILLARY WE'LL HELP YOU TO BRING IT ON HOME FOR US ALL.

    womanpower

The time has come and we women need to unite to show our power. Hillary is an incredible example of strength and courage. If women voted for Hillary any where near the percentage that African Americans are voting for Obama, we would be way ahead. African Americans are not afraid to say that they support Obama because he understands their issues and their pain.
Wake up women - no-one can represent us, our children, and our country better than Hillary. No-one can understand our issues, our pain better than Hillary. There is no shame to voting for who you think will represent your interests. Take a lesson from the African American community.
The time to do it is now!

by hsmd at 3/25/2008 8:04:20 PM

    You're great.

I am so proud to see Hillary getting endorsements from so very brave women that makes me believe in Hillary more and more.

Hillary is the international leader of this globe. God gave us Hillary, we'll give her to this globe for the betterment of this globe.
