Three Myths About the Democratic Race

by Peter Daou
3/24/2008 11:26:17 AM

UPDATE: The Pundits versus Reality in campaign 2008: THE PUNDITS: Hillary is throwing the "kitchen sink" at Barack Obama. THE REALITY: Barack Obama has been throwing the sink, the stove, the plates and the garbage can at Hillary. THE PUNDITS: Hillary lacks significant grassroots energy. THE REALITY: Hillary's supporters have written letters, blogged, donated tens of millions of dollars, volunteered millions of hours and made millions of calls. THE PUNDITS: There is a chorus of voices asking Hillary to withdraw from the race. THE REALITY: Precisely the same number of voters (22%) think Barack Obama should drop out of the race as Hillary. READ MORE

MYTH: Barack Obama is running a positive campaign that will unite Americans.

FACT: Barack Obama and his advisers have conducted a divisive "full assault" on Hillary's character.

While talking a lot about the politics of hope, change and unity, Sen. Obama and his campaign have been conducting a relentless and singularly personal assault on Hillary's character. They have blanketed big states with false negative mailers and radio ads and have described Hillary and her campaign as "disingenuous," "divisive," "untruthful," "dishonest," "polarizing," "calculating," "saying whatever it takes to win," "attempting to deceive the American people," "one of the most secretive in America," “deliberately misleading,” “literally willing to do anything to win,” and “playing politics with war."

This "full assault" on Hillary's integrity and character has reached a new peak since Hillary's victories on March 4th. One of Sen. Obama's top surrogates equated President Clinton with Joe McCarthy; another called Hillary a "monster;" and his campaign manager held an angry conference call claiming that Hillary is "deeply flawed" and has "character issues." That's neither unifying nor hopeful. If Sen. Obama really is the prohibitive favorite some say he is, these negative attacks make absolutely no sense. Why would a frontrunner seek to attack and divide? If Sen. Obama can't unify Democrats in a primary, how can he unify Americans in a general election?

=====

MYTH: The delegate "math" works decisively against Hillary.

FACT: The delegate math reflects an extremely close race that either candidate can win.

"The Math" is actually very simple: with hundreds of delegates still uncommitted, NEITHER candidate has reached the number of delegates required to secure the nomination. And EITHER candidate can reach the required number in the coming weeks and months. That is indisputable. No amount of editorials, articles, blog posts, charts, graphs, calculations, formulas, or projections will change the basic fact that either candidate can win. Pundits who confidently proclaim that Hillary has no hope of winning because of "the math," have counted Hillary out of this race three times before. Each time they based their sober assessments on 'facts' and 'realities' -- and each time they were wrong.

In a campaign with dozens of unexpected twists and turns, bold prognostications should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism. Look no further than Sen. Obama's "full assault" on Hillary's character to judge whether he thinks this election is over. The fact is this: Hillary and Sen. Obama are locked in a very close, hard-fought campaign and Hillary is demonstrating precisely the strength of character required of a president. Her resilience in the face of adversity, her faith in the voters, her capacity to rise to every challenge, are part of the reason she is the best general election candidate for Democrats. And it is why she is increasingly strong against John McCain in the polls at the same time that Sen. Obama is dropping against Sen. McCain.

=====

MYTH: For Hillary to win, super delegates must "overturn the will of the people."

FACT: The race is virtually tied, the "will of the people" is split, and both candidates need super delegates to win.

The Obama campaign and Sen. Obama's surrogates have engaged in a sustained public relations effort to convince people that the election is over and that if super delegates perform their established role of choosing a candidate who they believe will make the best nominee and president, they are somehow "overturning the will of the people." They have the audacity to make this argument while quietly and systematically courting those very same super delegates. They are courting them because they know that Sen. Obama needs super delegates to win. The Obama spin is being parroted daily by pundits, but it is patently false. The race is virtually tied; the "will of the people" is split. By virtually every measure, Hillary and Sen. Obama are neck and neck -- separated by less than 130 of the more than 3,100 delegates committed thus far and less than 1% of the 27 million+ votes cast, including Florida and Michigan. Less than 1%.

An incremental advantage for one candidate or the other is hardly a reason for super delegates to change the rules mid-game. Despite the Obama campaign's aggressive spin and pressure, the RULES require super delegates to exercise their best independent judgment, and that is what they will do. Even Sen. Obama's top strategist agrees they should. If not, then why don't prominent Obama endorsers like Senators Kerry (MA) and Kennedy (MA), and Governors Patrick (MA), Napolitano (AZ)  and Richardson (NM) follow the will of their constituents and switch their support to Hillary? After all, she won their states. And if this is truly about the "will of the people," then Sen. Obama's short-sighted tactic to run out the clock on a revote in Florida and Michigan accomplishes exactly two things: it disenfranchises Florida and Michigan's voters; and it hurts Democrats in a general election. Apparently, for the Obama campaign, the "will of the people" is just words.

    • If the primaries were counted as ELECTORAL VOTES, Hillary wins!

Remember..if the primary contests to date were counted as winner-take-all as most Electoral College votes are recorded in the general election, Hillary LEADS-- 219-202. Therefore, this fact shows that SHE IS THE MORE ELECTABLE CANDIDATE of the two Democratic contenders!   HILLARY '08 !

            • Petition

COUNT THE VOTES OF FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN
              The petition

Please sign the petition so the voices of all 50 states are heard. Michigan and Florida have been disenfranchised by the DNC. The voter's should not be held responsible for the flawed leadership of the DNC.

The UNITED STATES consists of 50 states and all voices from every state should count.

South Carolina, Iowa, New Hampshire held primaries earlier then they were suppose to and the DNC did not penalize them.

A double standard seems to be the DNC's practice.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED -- sign the petition so we can nominate a candidate that reflects the voices of all the people of the United States.

        • AOL Poll

It is very interesting that when you click on the state detail result for this poll, if it is tied they give it the Yes color -- for example the state of Florida Yes and No have 48% each, but the state is the yes color.

Don't Quit Hillary -- we are all behind you through PA on to the White House. GO GO GO

      • I agree

I figured that out as well.
The Democratic system allows for an Obama type candidate to seem electable.

Yes he has more states, but Hillary took the bigger states by MUCH BIGGER MARGINS.
They look small percentage wise, but those percentage points translate into 100,000s of votes.
We need the little states and yes those states must be heard as well.

But I live in L.A. County.
Hillary won L.A. County by a greater margin
than ALL THE VOTES COMBINED in some of Barack's wins.

        The system needs to change.

by mimig at 3/24/2008 4:35:45 PM

      • Ekectoral College Votes

        Yes,
Owensboro St4ve, that's the numbers I've been looking for.  It's the relative electoral votes, 219 -202, that really count.
I hop0e some staffer will pick up and see this needs to be brought out to the public.

by Wellelsey woman at 3/24/2008 7:17:45 PM

      • Another way of counting superdelegates

Has anyone noticed that if superdelegates were awarded by state - winner of a state gets its superdelegated, then Hillary is now ahead 291 to 219.  If superdelegates should reflect the "will of the people," why not do it by states?  This is just another argument to show that there are several ways to look at the roles of superdelegates.  Why let Obama and press dominate the "will of the people" debate by saying the supers must go with the national leader in pledged delegates.
        Bill O'Connor, Chicago

by imforhrc at 3/25/2008 1:06:11 PM

      • Myth vs. Facts

I think your myth/fact topics are reversed.  Your facts are the myth and the myths are the fact.  The main thing is Hillary is losing in pledged  delegates, popular vote total, and total number of states. When you look at the overall scheme of things one can see that targetting just the states you know a Democrat can win without trying to win states that might be ready to become blue e.g. North Carolina, Missouri, Nevada and Virginia.  The DNC 50 state strategy works.

by UhhhhhhYeah at 3/27/2008 6:39:54 PM

        • look at history

The media made a big deal about how Sen Obama won the last two races. But which states were they? Wyoming and Mississippi, two states that have consistently voted GOP. Even if Sen Obama won the nomination, I doubt if he (or ANY Democrat) could carry those states in the GENERAL election, when it really matters. The last time Mississippi went Democratic was over 3 decades ago, when Carter took the state in 1976. The last time Wyoming went Democratic was over 4 decades ago, when LBJ took the state in 1964. To put too much stock in states that, in all probability, will not be in our column in the general election seems to be courting disaster.

          by Tam1n0 at 3/27/2008 10:01:08 PM

        • looking at Nevada, specifically...

In the last 7 Presidential elections, Nevada went GOP 5 times and Democratic 2 times. Guess which 2 times they were...

          in 1980 Reagan won Nevada
          in 1984 Reagan won Nevada
in 1988 Bush Sr won Nevada
in 1992 BILL CLINTON won Nevada
in 1996 BILL CLINTON won Nevada
in 2000 George W Bush won Nevada
in 2004 George W Bush won Nevada

...if anything, your statement, at least in the case of Nevada, would seem to mean that Sen Clinton would have the best shot at winning the state.

          by Tam1n0 at 3/29/2008 6:22:45 AM

    • Thanks for the truth

Peter, I have been reading all these articles you have been talking about and I am thankful you have provided us with the true facts.  For months the media and Obama's campaign have misled us regarding this, just because they want Hillary out of the equation.  We want Hillary to continue the fight!  Go Hill!!!!!!!!

by wlm at 3/24/2008 7:07:08 PM

      • Obama and free air time

When Obama made that infamous speech, he got a lot of free air time. Why hasn't the Hillary team gotten the same amount of free air time? With that time, Hillary could speak about her plans for the economy  which is now the number one issue.
        Harvey

by dannysdad at 3/25/2008 8:05:06 PM

    • super delegates

I agree.  The delegates are to pick the best candiate to win and Hillary winning the big states need to win in Nov. is the best one and I think that the super delegates will agree

    Brilliant post!

    • reminiscent of 2000

This hurrying of getting a nominee and trying to get Hillary to quit is beyond ridiculous.  It's even more upsetting when it's coming from within our party.  Let's not forget that during the Gore Florida voting fiasco, the Republicans were rushing to end it before the votes were even counted.  HIllary is our fighter, and I know she would never quit!

      by vt68 at 3/24/2008 6:07:07 PM

    BEAUTIFULLY S TATED!

How true!  Shame on the media for portraying this false "will of the people."  Peter, thank you for so eloquently and clearly stating the reality of the situation.  I want Hillary to win more than ever before!  She is our only choice!

by Louise Peddell at 3/24/2008 11:43:40 AM

    Thank you, Peter

These are the exact points I have been making to people.  I hope the media reads and really digests this and stops trying to bury Senator Clinton's candidacy.  I can't wait until she proves them all wrong and surpasses him on popular vote and is within striking distance of the pledged delegates.  A big 20 point+ win in PA and an upset in NC will do it!!!

Keep up the optimism, Hillary supporters. Although I am reaching back to a music age long past (actually a year or so before I was born, I believe), in the words of the Carpenters, "We've Only Just Begun."

    Great Article!

Thanks Peter for clearing up the facts! This article is what the Clinton campaign needed to lay out for everyone since over the weekend, OB's campaign made an unsuccessful attempt to persuade everyone the race was over!

    Hillary will Win!!!

by Brian from TN at 3/24/2008 11:48:42 AM

    wow...

outstanding post.  was just thinking this weekend that with all the speculation, the one factor being left out of the equation is the will of the people who have yet to vote, and how important their voices will be to a race that's changing by the day.
right now the LAST thing any superdelegate should wish for is a truncated conclusion.  the final 10 primaries provide an OPPORTUNITY for the DNC to watch, evaluate, and choose the candidate best positioned to win in November (that is the desired outcome, isn't it?)  anyway, I hope Peter's post is going out as a press release.  also, suggestion for an HRC television ad in Pennsylvania:  the David Gergen comments on NAFTA that appear in the Fact Hub.

by KimNJ at 3/24/2008 11:48:58 AM

It's the bottom of the 9th. enning and the race is "tied"...

Hillary, is comming up to bat and is pointing out to center field, where the Democratic Party is.She "connects" and it's another home run, to "win", with the team that just did not give up.Because this primary race is like no other, and the voices of all Democrats, have "yet" to be heard.

    FINALLY!

This article says it ALL!  This ship is not sinking.  Stay the course everyone and we will dock at the White House come this November.
Obama's actions do not match his lofty rhetoric.  If he was truly the "change" candidate and such a great "uniter" he would be insisting that Florida and Michigan be counted.  He shouldn't silence the voices of these Americans.  Sure sounds like "politics as usual" to me Mr. Obama.  Fairly level this playing field.  Validate EVERY American's voice.  Let the remaining primary contests decide who our next democratic nominee should be. Be the kind of man that you keep telling us you are.

    Three Myths

This is the type of story that needs to be seen on television news stations. I think it's time to start running advertising all over the USA letting everyone see and hear what we here and see on hillaryclinton.com. The real truth has to be told in all areas of this campaign. The American public deserves an opportunity to really know what is going on. The half hearted sound bytes we get from the news are ridiculous-I always say, "if you want people to really know what you want them to really know, you have to tell them yourself.

I am a Michigander still hoping to be counted.

by Dwalakai at 3/24/2008 11:54:57 AM

    • Ditto

My post said a lot of the same (but somehow I can't find it).  These
myths have to be stated and widely distributed in all of the media.

Michigander, can we organize and get the Democratic party to realize
that they must stand for DEMOCRACY?  The Party should pay in full for redo primaries in both MI and FL, otherwise, Senators Kerry (MA) and Kennedy (MA), and Governors Patrick (MA), Napolitano (AZ)  and Richardson (NM) will have to switch to Hillary's delegate count.

    • Thank you

I just wanted to say thank you for clearing things up and emphasizing the fact that this race is not over.  I know for a fact she is the best choice for me and for the country.  She is an inspiration to me and I will stand behind her no matter what. As a military spouse I have been through three deployments and have seen first hand what this war has done to soldiers and their families. I am confident she will fix the Iraq issue and get our veterans the help they so desperately need.
      Hillary 08!

    • Thank You Peter

We're about a month away from the Pa. primary and it seems like the media wants to keep stirring up the pot to compete for ratings. Someone from Hillary's campaign needs to call a press conference or something to dispel these myths ASAP.

Hillary has tried to stick to the issues and from most of the articles I've read, BO's campaign's claims of negativity are hypocisy at its best.

      by ram78 at 3/24/2008 3:45:57 PM

    this really makes it clear

This is really helpful and important to show people that Hillary Clinton is leading the race and will be the nominee.  It is also important to emphasize that the party leaders also known as automatic delegates will exercise their judgment as to who is truly electable, and whose ethics, skills, and 35 years of experience will make her undefeatable.  I think the most amazing thing about Hillary is that she is so far ahead, but does not harp on it.  She's truly focused on delivering solutions and not just on this campaign.  Thank you Hillary, for all of your hard work and sleepless nights -- we as a nation need your leadership, integrity, and character.

    Excellent summary!

Thank you- this is an excellent summary. I've been so frustrated by the hypocrisy of the Obama campaign and blatantly biased coverage.

We need to get these points across right away!!! Wes Clark or Ed Rendell would be great people to bring up these points in the media. We really need to get this out there!

by Seattle Mom at 3/24/2008 11:59:06 AM

    • Hillary is our girl!

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday March 23 shows nationally, Hillary Clinton now holds an advantage over Barack Obama, 46% to 44%.

On Monday, March 24 Obama is viewed favorably by 46% of voters nationwide and unfavorably by 52%.

In discussing the Pennsylvania Primary, Governor Ed Rendell indicates that the Clinton campaign is ready to keep fighting to the end of the primaries and beyond.

      Go Hillary!

    GREAT POST

THIS IS GREAT!!!! You need to pass this on because the media is running with the other sides point of veiw 24/7 in the media and the blogs.

    Attention Media Outlets

This is so true and the media outlets need to be made aware that the Hillary supporters are not going to stand by and watch them tear down our candidate with out a fight.  She is still a strong competitor, but the media does not talk about the Obama campaign and their negative attacks against Clinton.  Bill Richardson should be ashamed for saying that the Clinton campaign has gone negative, this is simply not true and people need to wake up and see where all the negative comments are coming from.

    • Hillary knows that politics is not a straight line.

First let me say to be a Hillary supporter one must  have a deep sense of what is real and what is an illusion within the democratic party. There are many actors and players within the democratic party that are not operating in the best interest of the party. The average political observer believe that what you see is what you get and that the polictical journey to the White House is a straght line just follow it and you will get to the end.The reality is that there are as many democrats as Repubilcans who want Hillary to fail and why its easier to defeat a loser than a winner.Any democrat with a half of brain knows that only Hillary can defeat Mccain in the general election.....if Hillary fails those so call democratic actors and players whoes interest comes before the party will celebrate...i know who they are and you need to know who they are..they look like democrats but they are actually Republicans in sheeps clothing.REMEMBER POLITICS IS NOT A STRAIGHT LINE TO BE A WINNER ONE MUST FIRST DEFEAT THE STRONGEST OPPONENT....THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS IN THE PROCESS OF DOING JUST THAT..FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY THIS IS EXCACTLY WHAT THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBED....SUPPORT HILLARY NOW!

by SirHuddy at 3/24/2008 1:01:18 PM

    GREAT ARTICLE!

I think one reason a lot of these myths aren't being torn apart by the media is so that they can keep drawing this thing out to make $'s.    I can say personally that after I did all the research I believe if everyone knew the facts that Hillary would be the nominee many months ago.  But I think that actually all this news and hype is really helping to strengthen the democratic party (contrary to all the articles that this divisive conflict is hurting the democratic party).  Just look at the numbers.  Money is pouring into the Democratic Party and not into the Republican party.  Also a lot of Republicans are changing their affiliation to Democrat to be a part of it.  This is all going to help Hillary in the general election!  :)

But still most American's don't have the time to do all the research, so I am taking a half hour every day to post to blogs, vote for unbiased articles to increase their buzz, search for Hillary so the search engines increase the articles about her, so that the public who has less time on their hands can be better informed about how great a candidate she is. If 1 million click on unbiased articles and do searches for hillary, more unbiased articles about her will be posted.   If anyone else has the time to do this, I think it will help dispel these myths.

Thanks again for the great article!

    • Increasing Unbiased Articles about Hillary

Thanks George for your ideas on how to increase unbiased articles about Hillary! This is new to me and so simple! Even people we know who are not donating or calling can do this! We really need to get the word out about this!

I am so glad you suggested this. Not having access to very many email addresses, I am printing your comments to give to people who support Hillary but are not doing anything to help.

      Thanks!

    Myths about the race

Thank you so much for this article. Please bring it to the attention to the media. They seem so confused!

I am also concerned about the air time allocation to the candidates. It is becoming outrageous.

From your article, "Why don't prominent Obama endorsers like Senators Kerry (MA) and Kennedy (MA), and Governors Patrick (MA), Napolitano (AZ)  and Richardson (NM) follow the will of their constituents and switch their support to Hillary? After all, she won their states." They want it both ways, they are applying double standards. This needs to be brought to the attention of the public.

What else could we do (WE,THE PEOPLE) to let the media know that what they are doing is not journalism? It goes against the roots of democracy!

    Spot On.

Peter, this is *precisely* what needs to be said at this moment, particularly in the blogosphere.  You have hit the nail decisively on the head, and, in so doing, you help us Hillary supporters to debunk the repressive spin that some pundits have "parroted" (excellent choice of words).

This is one of the strongest communications I have seen from the campaign website to date.  I encourage the other members of the Team, including those of us supporting you, to amplify this message.

by bobbank at 3/24/2008 12:20:26 PM

    Thank you

Thanks for reminding us about the FACTS. I swear, I stopped watching the news because of how they underestimate Hillary and her campaign. This party is just getting started!

    Update AOL Straw Poll

Great article. These are the points we should make to the superdelegates. They should choose base on their own conscious, not their own district or state, unlike what Richardson and Ted Kennedy did.

Please update AOL new Straw Poll which is refreshed each Monday. Also, vote in today's Hot Seat Poll, concerning Richardson's comment about Hillary, which is on the left margin of the Straw Poll results.

    • I AGREE!!

BIG MEDIA AND OBAMA WANT THIS RACE TO BE OVER. IT IS NOT OVER UNTIL WE HILLFANS SAY IT IS OVER!!! DONATE AND BLOG HILLFANS. HILLARY NEEDS US!!

    • thanks!!

Thank you for getting out this message!  I too, have been frustrated with the media, as I know their "logic" is flawed!

      Hillary All THE WAY!!

We're still fighting for her in TEXAS dealing with  these ridiculous caucus conventions.  People are still volunteering, attending delegate training, etc. long after the primary is over.  We totally support Senator Clinton and fight to get out her message EVERY DAY!!

      Thanks again!

by maddie at 3/24/2008 1:09:17 PM

    Richardson

Gov. Richardson did say that the Super Delegates should go the way their states voted.

by Cbruso at 3/24/2008 12:24:19 PM

Thank you Peter for myth explanations

My support for Hillary is based on my belief in Hillary's sincerity and the fact of her lifetime dedication of being a public servant. I compare Hillary's  sincerity and dedication to my perception of Senator Obama's own Goal oriented personal aspiration of becoming the first person from a mixed marriage (white  mother and African father ) to become President of the US. He obviously has a well planned career path with the talent and the will to execute his plan for achieving his goal.

Obama's strength is  his  strong motivation  for his personal success. His only plans for solutions for America have been secondary  thoughts when the applause for his stardom has faltered.

Hillary has the strong overriding desire, knowledge and character to resolve issues for the American public. Hillary probably knows too much, cares too much and those two characteristics hamper her "political" performance and stardom appeal!!

She is as focused on helping Americans as Obama is focused to achieve is personal goal.

I pray for the enlightenment of the voters in the remaining primaries and for those of us who have  voted to help with that enlightenment

    by Marty 1 at 3/24/2008 12:29:38 PM

    • Marty 1, agree...

Yes, while BO the "Show Horse" is on vacation in the Virgin Islands, Hillary the "Work Horse" is working on solutions/Bill for the mortgage crisis and other major economic issues with her congressional colleagues (i.e., Barney Frank and Chris Dodd). She is also listening to the problems of the American people -- PA today  -- so that their voices are heard and included in the legislation.

I know it's not scientific, but it is a matter of perception.  Please vote in this week's poll.  There are also some other polls on the side.
