Campaign 2008: Pundits Versus Reality

by Peter Daou
3/28/2008 11:18:45 AM

THE PUNDITS
Hillary Clinton will lose New Hampshire and the race will be over
THE REALITY
Hillary Clinton wins New Hampshire, defying the predictions and the polls

THE PUNDITS
Hillary Clinton will lose the big states on Super Tuesday and the race will be over
THE REALITY
Hillary Clinton wins the big states on Super Tuesday – and wins them by double digits

THE PUNDITS
Hillary Clinton will lose Texas and possibly Ohio on March 4th and the race will be over
THE REALITY
Hillary Clinton wins both Texas and Ohio on March 4th – and she wins Ohio by double digits

THE PUNDITS
Despite Hillary Clinton's big victories on March 4th, "the math" works decisively against her and the race is essentially over
THE REALITY
The math is simple: neither candidate has reached the number of delegates required to
secure the nomination and either candidate can win

THE PUNDITS
Barack Obama is substantially ahead in the pledged delegate count; pledged delegates are the only measure of success; therefore the race is essentially over
THE REALITY
The candidates are within fractions of one another on delegates; Barack Obama needs super delegates to win; and a marginal pledged delegate lead does not determine the outcome

THE PUNDITS
Barack Obama is substantially ahead in the popular vote; Florida and Michigan don’t count; therefore the race is essentially over
THE REALITY
The popular vote is virtually tied; half of Barack Obama's narrow vote advantage is from his home state; and his lead excludes Florida and Michigan

THE PUNDITS
Once the remaining states vote, Barack Obama will be substantially ahead in delegates and votes and the race will be over
THE REALITY
The race is a dead heat now and no one knows where things will end up after millions of remaining voters in the upcoming states make their choice

THE PUNDITS
Hillary Clinton's situation is dire; her campaign is struggling; her supporters are disillusioned and desperate
THE REALITY
Hillary Clinton and her supporters are calm, confident, and focused heading into the key
state of PA, where she is running strong

THE PUNDITS
Hillary Clinton’s campaign lacks significant grassroots energy; only one candidate has mobilized supporters to take action for the campaign
THE REALITY
Hillary Clinton’s supporters across America have written letters, blogged, donated tens of millions of dollars, volunteered millions of hours and made millions of calls

THE PUNDITS
There is a loud and growing chorus of voices asking Hillary Clinton to withdraw from the race
THE REALITY
Precisely the same number of voters (22%) think Barack Obama should drop out of the
race as Hillary Clinton

THE PUNDITS
Hillary Clinton is the candidate running a negative, divisive campaign; she is throwing the "kitchen sink" at Barack Obama
THE REALITY
Barack Obama has been throwing the sink, the stove, the plates and the garbage can at Hillary Clinton, attacking her integrity and character every day

THE PUNDITS
For Hillary to win the nomination, super delegates will have to "overturn the will of the
people"
THE REALITY
The will of the people is split and both candidates need - and are making their case to -
super delegates

THE PUNDITS
Hillary Clinton is threatening to poach pledged delegates from Barack Obama
THE REALITY
Barack Obama is reportedly already trying to poach pledged delegates from Hillary Clinton

THE PUNDITS
Florida and Michigan’s voters won't be heard and their delegates won’t be seated all
because of complicated procedural roadblocks
THE REALITY
Barack Obama is intentionally disenfranchising voters in two critical states for purely political reasons, namely, that he'll lose his small advantage if they count

THE PUNDITS
Every single word or action from Hillary Clinton, her campaign, her surrogates and her supporters is part of a calculated and cynical political strategy
THE REALITY
Hillary Clinton is a loyal Democrat, a lifelong public servant, a tireless and
tenacious candidate, and is fighting hard - and fair - to win with the help of millions of dedicated supporters

    • Going the Distance

These facts are well stated.  Voters not the pundits will decide this nomination, so we have to stay resolved and continue to provide our financial support to the campaign.  Do what you can and spread the word.  Hillary we are behind you all the way to Denver and beyond!!

        • Obama supporters are making calls to HRC delegates

I'm going to the smith county convention tomorrow as a supporter.  I just spoke with my niece who is a delegate in another county.  She said, "I am anxious to see the turn out, apparently the obama campaign has been putting out calls down here stating the convention will last until around 9:00pm in an attempt to discourage hillary supporters from showing.

by jlynnm at 3/28/2008 4:40:29 PM

          • Just got a call (recording) from Obama

I'm in Nacogdoches county....and he is calling and I also got a postcard from him.

I ain't changing my presidential preference for nothing and the folks in my area are strong for Hillary too!!!

Please, please, please....take an 1 hour tonight to call texas delegates and alternates. Tell em to be early!!

            by Roni1214 at 3/28/2008 5:24:13 PM

            • roni1214 how do you make these calls?

If it helps I will do it but no contacts on emails for me to make?

THANKS for being so committed to the BEST CANDIDATE as we well know!!!

              HILLARY ALL THE WAY!

            • telephone numbers

              3/28/08

How do I get telephone numbers to call? I can make some calls tomorrow. Do I need to call directly to one of the headquarters in Texas?
Maybe this info can be posted by the campaign  Kew Gardens, N.Y.

by kew gardens at 3/28/2008 11:50:50 PM

          • WHAT? can we call delegates this is just low... let campaign know

jlynnm write "contact us" to let HRC campaign to know too.. so they will be up on this  too... the on-going stinky campaign tactics by this other group is delorable and yet Hillary always takes the negative hits...ENOUGH let's just keep calling and supporting Hillary and the campaign and donating!!! WE CAN DO THIS and make it happen!!!

THEN THERE WILL BE REAL CHANGE...hopefully all over.... the old guard would finally be QUIET and not negative against HRC when she is MADAME PRESIDENT!

by Mjoynaples at 3/28/2008 6:17:01 PM

      • re: Going the Distance

The pundits of the other campaign says that Hillary did not win the most delegates in Texas.  FALSE.  How can you trust a campaign that does not tell the truth?
        Go Hillary

      • Denver or Bust

I just contacted Dodd's and Leahy's office telling them to keep their powder dry and to stand up for a free and fair election by allowing a re-vote in Florida and Michigan. I would encourage others to do the same.

by Angola at 3/29/2008 1:11:13 PM

        • Florida and Michigan

I do not understand how Florida can elect Bush?  Now Florida can not vote?  I have family in Florida and it is sad how they are totally out of the real vote, and every vote does not count?  Why is this in America a democracy of people for the people , only certain people make all the choices for us?  I live in Indiana and I am Proud of America everyday and have been , since I have been able to remember.  I am proud to be an American and I would liek the same type of PERSON elected.  I think HILLARY is Proud of America everyday.  We cannot allow this election to be taken from we the people, again?

          what should I tell them?

          by democratic2008 at 3/28/2008 2:35:25 PM

          • what Hillary stands for

Ask them what it is they value in a president and what their needs are. What do they care about? Depending on who it is:
            - tell them about Hillary's policy on Health Care and how it is she is the only one that stands for Universal Health Care and her opponent's plan will leave out 15 million people.
            - If they are students and they have college loans, tell them about Hillary's plan to forgive them for their loans if they will take a public service job for a while.

by Janey at 3/28/2008 4:26:57 PM

          • something else

Remind them that if they want their needs to be fulfilled they need to help by investing in Hillary now because she is the only one who will fight for their values and needs.

I just donated what they ask of me in the email today. Was a stretch but we will make it. I am not giving up, we need Hillary in the white house. Let us stand with her at every turn. God Bless You Hillary.

by John in Jersey at 3/28/2008 1:53:23 PM

    • Poll Also stated....

The poll also stated that 28% of Democrats will stay home if BO gets the nomination, while only 19% will not vote for her if she gets the nom.  I think that speaks volume to her case as well.

I believe that the die hard Democrats are behind her while BO have the Independent that have only voted for him to vote against her because he will be a easier candidate to beat in November.  Besides, these independent will vote for McCain comes election.  THIS IS WHAT THE SUPER DELEGATES SHOULD LOOK AT WHEN THEY ARE DECIDING.

      by DE4Hillary at 3/28/2008 12:21:49 PM

      • We must quell the yell from the "drop out" undemocratic crowd

Hello Hillary Bloggers - first time for me to blog here, I have been reading the blogs though and admire all your efforts. I just donated again. Senator Leahy came out again with the demand that Hillary should leave the race. How dare he! Doesn't he represent all the people in his state  not just Obama people. I think it is outrageous the politicians who are doing this. This is a democracy and due process is in effect. Nowhere is it written that you stop an election in the middle when you're guy/gal is ahead...that's decidedly unamerican! I am writing to Senator Leahy and urge others to do the same. We can't let all these Hillary detractors try to "Fix" this primary election! Donate what you can please, any amount helps!

Perhaps I am the only one who views Hillary as Americas Iron Lady. Like a true champion Hillary keeps getting up off the canvas and keeps fighting and winning. I am republican and I don't think M. Thatcher has anything on Hillary. Mad props shes one tough chick and she has made me a believer. There is one Iron Lady Now!

Well, I somehow resisted Hillary's Email request, because I have been donating more than I can afford right now, but when I was confronted with the contributions meter, I could not resist. That is how powerful that money meter is. Besides I really like the new format, it is really enticing.

    • Just donated/ MEDIA COVERAGE in INDIANA-KENTUCKY

I received an e-mail that told how much money Hillary needs, saw the meter, and donated. I live in Owensboro, KY / Evansville, IN media market. The NBC affiliate is already airing Obama ads as of today (Mar.28). Hillary needs not only that big presence in PA, but we need to get her on the air in Indiana and the neigboring western Kentucky media. I hope Hillary's ads can be seen in other large population areas such as Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Paducah, Ashland, and the northern Kentucky area near Cincinnati. LET'S ALL SEE TO IT THAT HILLARY'S MESSAGE REACHES ALL STATES WHICH ARE YET TO HOLD PRIMAARIES. HILLARY '08!

I just wrote to John Edwards and invited his wife and him to stay with my partner and I this weekend and I pleaded with him to endorse Hillary.  I read her health plan and his and they are so alike.  This issue will not go away and neither will the sick people in this country.

And, may I add that Hillary's supporters aren't just following on a whim or joining in a transitory popular "movement", we are dedicated to her winning the White House - not just the Nomination. And, from what I've observed on her website and at blogs across the Blogosphere, her supporters are very creative and tenacious. BO and his supporters should be worried!

Message about the misleading information from pundits.

The pundits do not speak for me and the millions of voters who support Hillary Clinton.  It disturbs me to hear the words uttered by these pundits who obviously have no idea how strongly we support Hillary.  Hillary is incredibly strong and her strength is an inspiration to those of us who support her campaign.

by Oklahoman for Hillary at 3/28/2008 11:29:37 AM

    THANK YOU PETER

Thank you for clarifying all the "NOISE" out in the media.  It is soo disheartening to hear the pundits, the naysayers, say that Hillary has no chance of winning.  I say, get rid of those pundits and just let the candidates run a fair and competitive race.

    by HILLA-Victo-RY at 3/28/2008 11:29:56 AM

    sen leahy

every person needs to email sen patrick leahy immediatly and show their disgust with his call today for sen clinton to drop out of the race. he is a strong obama supporter and a big supporter of not recognizing the votes of fla and mich. just do search of sen leahy.gov and his address will come up. this is so important that the leadership or so called leadership be made aware that we are not the uneducated low lifes they think we are and we know 1% of the votes seperate these candidates, and we know neither will win without the super delegates and we are aware of how the dnc has and its leadership of howard dean, sens kennedy, kerry and leahy have tried to strong arm voters into giving up their rights to pick the candidate in this primary. URGENT URGENT.

by cogypsy at 3/28/2008 11:31:24 AM

    The Negative Media

Senator Clinton's biggest challenge in this campaign has not been Senator Obama. It has been the extremely negative media!

    • Hillary's challenge and support

One can only wonder how out-front Hillary would be in this campaign were it not for the boldly unfair, negative media.  It is a real testament and tribute to her campaign, her life-long commitment to the American people, and to her millions of loyal supporters that she has done so well in spite of the hurdles!

Let's keep it up!  There is no doubt about who has the qualifications to become our President and lead this country in the right direction!

    Electoral College Picks the President

and you need Texas, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and California.

    Who has all those states?
    Hillary Clinton

What other states have the most electoral college votes?
    Pennsylvania and Florida.

by OscarValdez at 3/28/2008 11:33:33 AM

    • Florida & Michigan

Oscar, Add to thyour list, FL & MI! I believe in the end both the popular votes and pledged delegates from these states will count. Senator Obama may come around soon to some fair way of handling this.

Don't count on Howard Dean for doing anything soon!

      by alabamian18 at 3/28/2008 1:33:54 PM

    Great Framing

Thanks again Peter for framing the many issues that are out there and constantly only being framed in one way by the media.  I actually wrote to one of the networks to point out that 22% of people want Obama to withdraw; they of course only ever report the anti Clinton tally.    I continue to be amazed at Hillary's grace as she tenatiously goes on and rises above all of the garbage being thrown at her.

by marsha mcLean at 3/28/2008 11:33:54 AM

    Oh and my favorite reality

BO has been throwing the sink, the stove, the plates and the garbage can!  And guess what?  Hillary still stands and so do we.

    Proud of Hillary?  Hill yeah!!!

by mkind at 3/28/2008 11:36:07 AM

    • The sink, the stove, the plates and the garbage can

and yes Hillary is still standing. The pundits are so out of touch with the people. So much so, that they are not even aware what the people are talking about around the kitchen table and in the cafeteria of many working places. And trust me it's not Bosnia!

People are tired, they are weary of the load that they carry, and want someone to truly listen and to do something for them. And whether they want to accept it or not, it is Hillary that is listening and trying to give the common man a fair shake in the American Dream. You go girl.

by hopewithhillary at 3/28/2008 12:13:16 PM

Wow! Thanks for the Clearing up the Picture! The Future is Bright for Hillary

Thanks for pushing back against the Pundits with this clear and concise summation of the facts about the democratic primary process and the opponent's campaign which is playing politics even though it tries to portray a picture that it doesn't.

    pundits

this is a nice piece and should be sent to the media.  lol. we as hillary's supporters have and will continue to rally around her and if anything will get stronger.

by gramps at 3/28/2008 11:44:11 AM

    Pundits Vs. Reality

Thanks for this Peter!  These facts lifted my spirits today.  And the quote above, with its satirical and humorous tone, is nothing but true.

Go Hillary.  Go all the way to 1600 PA Ave...  Your supporters will meet and greet and cheer and applaud and vindicate you there!!!

    by RN4HRC at 3/28/2008 11:45:06 AM

    Finally the Truth

Thanks Peter for rebutting every major talking point that the media has bought hook, line, and sinker from the Obama campaign and keeps rehashing as "new" news in one form or other each day. What I cannot understand is why is the media going through Senator Clinton's experience with a fine tooth comb instead of pointing out the fact that Senator Obama has literally NO SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE.

Once again Peter you have spelled it out.We Americans who live in reality appreciate your ability to cut through the re-cycled Obama-speak served up to us every day by the media pundints (I wish you could go toe to toe with Cris Mathews).I will be sending this to everyone I know and I will never give up fighting for Hillary!

    YESSSS!!!!!!!

Peter, you have done us a great service today. I think if I hear one more pundit tries to marginalize Hillary by saying "She's desperate" I will scream!! Another one is "The Clintons are obviously desperate (accompanied by a knowing chuckle)...they will do anything to win). And all the time she's working for US, trying to keep her head down, trying to talk to the people, trying to be herself.....and doing a GREAT job!!! I will forward this to everyone I know!!!

    • Media's President

I'm not so sure that it is Obama that they really want. If Obama gets the nomination, it will be easier for McCain to win the General Election. The media has been ever so soft on McCain also.

    Senator Clinton's Speech

I just listened to part of Hillary's speech on MSNBC. GREAT!!!!! Telling how she will "fight" for all Americans everyday morning to night... We all know she will with no questions asked!!!!!

Just donated $50.00 my fourth contribution.
Keep donating,so she can continue to "fight" for us.

    • She will

I really believe that Hillary will fight for everyone. Did you know she started working on Universal Health Care three days after Bill was sworn in? I really believe that when Hillary says she will be ready on Day 1, she means she WILL BE READY ON DAY !

by Janey at 3/28/2008 12:08:48 PM

    BRAVO!

As usual great job Peter in differentiating fact from fiction--myth from reality.  The media is a destructive force and it is good to see a strong summary of the overall picture to counter the negative spin.  THANKS!

    Let's keep the momentum going

Here in the DC area I've been to two of her fundraisers this week with personal donations at each one fo $50.  I'm giving another $50 today via the web and I'll give a few bucks each week for as long as she's in the race.  I challenge anyone to donate a few bucks each week!  I know times are tight for a lot of people right now but there is a lot at stake here!

by ScottforHillaryinVA at 3/28/2008 11:58:26 AM

    Thanks

Thank you Peter and you are so right on everything. Hillary hasn't run a negative campaign. It has been Obama.

by Janey at 3/28/2008 11:59:33 AM

    Awesome New Meter!

C'mon folks, time is winding down -- give, give, give it your all, but then also, this will be a major stat to show strength moving into PA and thereafter, when the momentum bursts our way. This really is the final countdown.

Let's close this month out strong so we can finish the race strong! Our money shows the DNC why FL and MI must be seated at the convention and it tells the superdelegates how extraordinary it is we can still run so strong even though being buffeted by so many media assaults.

    by Bawlmer4Hill at 3/28/2008 11:59:50 AM

    Thank you for this!

Peter, You have put to paper everything i have been saying.I personally witnessed the large crowd gathered in Winston-Salem yesterday. While I did not get in the event, I had the opportunity to see for myself the demographic of Hillary's supporters. I am one of those over-the-hill white women that is supposedly casting THE votes for Hillary. This crowd consisted of a representative mix of the USA. European, African, Asian, Latino heritage--red, yellow, black, white.I was surprised by the number of youth voters present--all ages were there. If you listen to the media, you perception is the complete antithesis of what is the reality.I witnessed it first hand!People were energized (yes even us over-the hillers)and fighting and even a bit angry over what has happened with this race.I actually got a little excited myself and I demonstratively asked a campaign staffer to tell Hillary to stay in the race and not listen to the media BS.I have wanted to say that to someone that matters for days--I hope he conveyed this message to her.So I say, bring it on NORTH CAROLINA---a surprise may be waiting!

by lastaff at 3/28/2008 12:01:11 PM

    • Winston Salem Town Hall

I agree with Lastaff.  WE WANT HILLARY TO STAY IN!!! THE RACE AIN'T OVER AND WE ARE WINNING!  Any one who wants to shut us down are fearful of our momentum!

I was VERY fortunate to squeeze into the town hall in Winston-Salem.  The lines were so very long, and I *barely* made it in. I am very grateful I did, but sorry Lastaff you did not make it in. Inside it was an amazing experience.  The most moving town hall I have ever been to.  We were ecstatic inside.  Hillary was brilliant and eloquent.  The crowds bristled with excitment when she gave her message.  I can not wait to vote on May 6, and I am going to start grassrooting for Hillary today:)

Also peculiarly I found one of my friends (an Obama fan) who brought a tape recorder so that she could present the ideas of Hillary's speech to the Forsyth County Obama team.  Interesting how they are so full of ideas that they have to copy ours.  I told her doesn't it mark to you as strange that you are here as a mole to copy Hillary's ideas for your candidate?  She said all candidates do that. I told her, we don't. We are too busy presenting Hillary's solutions and ideas to America; we don't have time to do that!  Then I joked with her and told her that she better be careful tonight!  When she wakes up she might be a Hillary fan after she has had time to let all of Hillary's ideas seep in:)

    • Still fighting in TEXAS!!

If you get the chance, make phone calls in TX on the Home Page of Hillary's site!  We are trying to get ALL of her delegates back for TOMORROW'S CONVENTION!!

VERY IMPORTANT!!  35% of the vote for delegates will be determined from our "caucus", which was a bad joke, but nevertheless, pleeeeeeeeease help make these phone calls.  IT WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE in her delegate total from TEXAS, which she already "won" the primary, but that only accounted for unfortunately 65% of total vote.

It's not up to Hillary. It is just that the media doesn't show Hillary's speeches or at least not like they do Obama's. Hillary gets a few minutes (10) where her Economy speech is shown while Obama gets to have his whole speech shown.

by Janey at 3/28/2008 4:54:07 PM

    The Pundits and The Reality

    The Pundits
If you only listen to the pundits you would think the issues in this campaign are polls.

    The Reality
If you listen to Senator Clinton and read this web site you will know what the issues really are and will know what her plans are to solve these issues.

by trishandparker at 3/28/2008 12:04:01 PM

    Pundits vs Reality

Since the Obama supporters are continously calling for Hillary to withdraw, I have one piece of advice.  Sample all the voices on the Obama side and the media calling for Hillary to get out and run a commercial with it, posing the question to the primary voters.  I am sure there will be a backlash against those congressmen and senators running for relection and in the media in districts where Hillary is strong.  I am with her all the way!

by zeferimus at 3/28/2008 12:05:06 PM

    Obama's Own"Words"

I think when it comes to making sure Florida and Michigan are counted we should address a speech given by Obama himself:

The memory of Selma still lives on in the spirit of the Voting Rights Act. Since that day, the Voting Rights Act has been a critical tool in ensuring that all Americans not only have the right to vote, but the right to have their vote counted. Those of us concerned about protecting those rights can't afford to sit on our laurels upon reauthorization of this bill. We must take advantage of this rare united front and continue the fight to ensure unimpeded access to the polls for all Americans. In other words, we need to take the spirit that existed on that bridge, and we have to spread it across this country.
Remarks on Senate floor by BO in support of HR9.
The Voting Rights Act. July 2006.

Hillary is the BEST for our nation!

Hillary, we, the supporters, are standing behind you. Do not give up, it is not ethical what they are doing to you. I wrote to Pelosi, I wrote to Richardson, I wrote to Howard Dean, and whoever tries to finish this. Our voices should be heard. MI and FL are fighting and now they don't want the rest of the people to vote. Well, this is the time to prove them wrong. we have to make phone calls, donate and fight until the end.
    Hillary 08!
