Hillary dominates Philadelphia focus group. “NYDIA HAN: The real take away is this. We now know who won the debate according to our focus group. Take a look. Senator Clinton is the debate winner, at least according to our focus group. 23% believe Senator Obama won while 50% believed Senator Clinton won.” [WPVI Post-Debate Analysis, 4/16/08]

ABC News’ Rick Klein – 'Clinton is back to the strong presence we saw early in the cycle.' [ABC News Political Radar, 4/16/08]

NBC News’ Chuck Todd – Obama ‘did not have a good night.’ [MSNBC Post-Debate Analysis, 4/16/08]

NBC News' Chuck Todd—Obama’s answer on Ayers and the flag ‘were simply weak.’ “His answer on Ayers and the flag question were simply weak; He seemed unprepared for them; Kinda surprising because he normally has a decent rant against "old politics" and yet "old politics" questions seemed to stump him.” [NBC First Read, 4/16/08]

The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder – [T]here's no way Obama could fared worse. [The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder, 4/16/08]

Washington Post’ Chris Cillizza— Obama ‘struggled quite a bit’ when asked about Rev. Wright. “…He struggled quite a bit more when asked to answer for Wright, his former pastor.” [Washington Post, The Fix, 4/16/08]

New York Times’ Katharine Seeyle: Hillary’s ‘in her element as she goes into details.’ "She’s becoming expansive, seemingly in her element as she goes into details; Mr. Obama does not look as thrilled to be still standing there." [New York Times, The Caucus, 4/16/08]

Talking Points Memo’s Josh Marshall – Hillary ‘certainly seems more self-assured.' “She certainly seems more self-assured on the Iran question than Obama did. The question of extending an American security umbrella to Israel is very dicey. And he could clearly see he was on delicate territory.” [Talking Points Memo, 4/16/08]

Philadelphia Inquirer blog – ‘Obama is again less certain, and rambles a bit.’ “Obama is again less certain, and rambles a bit when asked about the Washington D.C. gun ban. Gibson asks him to deny that he has ever advocated a complete ban on hand guns in 1996. Obama says no. But whatever the truth, no other answer is possible.” [Philadelphia Inquirer Blog, 4/16/08]

NBC News’ Matthew Berger – Obama ‘tried to have it both ways’ with Israel. “Obama's answer on an Iranian attack on Israel tried to seem to have it both ways: highlight his support for Israel but not lock him into treating an attack on Israel like an attack on the U.S. But it may have looked more like a no because it wasn't a firm yes. Clinton's answer seemed more direct.” [NBC First Read, 4/16/08]

Hillary just demonstrated what qualities it takes. She was calm, knew here numbers and was just in utter command of the stage. Obama seemed rattled, off key, not together.. GO Hillary!!!!!!!!!

Hillary was AWESOME!  Being straight forward, honest and without any hesitation is how a President should act.  That's why she will win!
    GO HILLARY!

    BRILLIANT

Senator Clinton was brilliant in every way.  She looked calm and confident.  She spoke clearly on every topic.  She overwhelmingly did a better job.  Don't worry about the ABC poll.  Watch the blogs and papers tomorrow.  She will get high marks.

by GAforHill at 4/16/2008 10:48:48 PM

Hillary was great but shame on the media' headlines

I've seen three headlines that basically summarized the debate this way:

Clinton Says Obama Can Beat McCain

ABCNEWS, AOL NEWS, and Iwon News said:
Clinton emphatically says Obama can win White House

And the media wonder why we don't trust them....

Hillary you were brilliant tonight and we will be with you in Denver.  GO TEAM HILLARY.  I'm making another donation tonight.

by taylorgrob at 4/16/2008 10:51:29 PM

    • Agree-shame on headline

But the headline does not convey what really happened at the debate tonight. Hillary was truly brilliant tonight. Finally questions were asked that should have been asked a long time ago. The country needs the best candidate to run against McCain. And that is Hillary Clinton.

God Bless America! God Bless Hillary Clinton!

by hopewithhillary at 4/16/2008 11:11:30 PM

    • Shame on the media !!! ITA with Taylorgrob

It's so frustrating. Made me REALLY realize how the media controls us. They tell us what they want us to know. Scary...

by Poochgirl at 4/16/2008 11:42:45 PM

    • Democrats must win

What she really said -- the first thing she said -- was that the Democratic candidate must win because we cannot stand 4 more years of Republicans. (That is a paraphrase).  She said he could win because she would support him if he is the nominee, spoken like a true Democrat.  Did they really expect her to say he could not win?

by bflynch at 4/17/2008 1:02:12 PM

    support

I am so proud of our Hillary...she was a credit to our country this evening in Philadelphia ... she is ready, prepared, eloquent.  Barack is not a visionary ... he is a handsome, well educated, young guy who has done well in a presidential race...only Clinton is ready to lead and be president.  She is an incredible candidate.  She looked wonderful.  I really don't know how she does it --- her schedule is grueling --- I loved the comment "I may be many things but I am not dumb."  Too funny.  This woman is brilliant.  Thank you Hillary.  Just let us know how we can continue to support your campaign....Nevada fan

    the defining moment

    hi everyone,
watching this debate i knew with a strong conviction that this was the defining moment in the race for the democratic presidential nomination. sen clinton was overwhelmingly the leader. sen obama was clearly out of his element when confronted with sen clinton's strength and the breadth and details of her plans. i do give him credit for persisting with his campaign, and who knows, maybe the clinton/obama ticket would be a winner.
it was great to see chelsea supporting her extraordinary mother.

    COMMANDING

Hillary was fantastic, as always. Her answers on the economy, gas prices, and foreign policy were detailed, direct, and clear. Obama wanders all over the place. I don't see how this can't be obvious to everyone. She is stellar.

by fif at 4/16/2008 11:04:53 PM

    • RIGHT ON

He talks in circles, I can never seem to follow his line of thought. Hillary was great and so knowledgeable and would make America a proud and moral, progressive nation again. What she is saying is about the future not the past as most pundits say. How these people can say that she was negative against OB amazes me when she only answered the questions truthfully as most of us would.

Building on Senator Clinton's great success

Dear Senator Clinton, Thank you for showing all your many strengths in the debate tonight. I have been working hard at raising funds, and so many people were energized that many donations are coming in! I'll be in Lancaster, canvassing over the weekend.  Tonight, you stood by us by standing out; we are going to stand by you and make sure you have funds and volunteers needed to win big in the upcoming contests!

by hoosiersfriend at 4/16/2008 11:07:29 PM

    • Nice response

Nice to see how quickly you folks put this blog together.  All you fellow Hillary supporters out there - don't let the internet be Obama turf.  Get out to the blogs, look for all the "polls" on websites like msnbc, etc., and let everyone know how proud you are of your candidate's performance tonight.

I have some constructive criticism that I will send you folks by e-mail.

But one thing I have to say: Hillary's explanation of energy policy was absolutely brilliant!  Are you folks able to put some clips together for us?

by bobbank at 4/16/2008 11:17:03 PM

    Go Hillary!

How nice it was to see Obama trying to come up with real answers to the negatives of the past few weeks! His fans are so upset on all the blogs saying he was treated so unfairly! Don't they care at all about the company he keeps? There's no way that he'll beat McCain!

    by Shari F at 4/16/2008 11:09:31 PM

I Support HIllary but I Will "NEVER" SUPPORT OBAMA

I respect Hillary a great deal and will be for her until the end, but if Obama is nominated, I will not vote for him no matter what anyone else says.  I respect Hillary but not enough to vote for someone I have no faith in.  I am first an American and then a Democrat.

by decstl at 4/16/2008 11:09:45 PM

    • Did you hear Hillary?

We can have our differences on who could do it better, but to vote for McCain would mean this whole campaign really is for nothing.  Hillary said it well, the Democrat HAS to win!

by SouthBaySteve at 4/17/2008 1:11:59 AM

      • america first

sorry, i am for hillary as much as the next person, but if she does not get the nomination, I WILL NOT BE VOTING OBAMA, THAT IS FOR SURE, MCCAIN WILL GET MY VOTE, AND MY SUPPORT

by migs at 4/17/2008 11:10:16 AM

    debate

Our girl was awesome!  Good, detailed, confident answers.

Obama seemed irritated to have to even answer questions and his answers were so vague.  He gets such little practice from the msm.  "I wasn't there that day", "I didn't know about it", and "It shouldn't be a topic of discussion" are not answers.

On the question about his statement about bitter small-towners, he didn't even apologize.  He didn't seem to even acknowlege that his comments hurt people - it was just their fault for not understanding what he was trying to say.  For such an eloquent speaker, he is sure misunderstood a lot.

I hope the voters in the upcoming states were watching closely.

    Go Hillary!

I CAN NOT BELIEVE WE ALL WATCHED THE SAME DEBATE on political machine on aol

I CAN NOT BELIEVE WE ALL WATCHED THE SAME DEBATE

HILLARY SHOWED SHE WAS MUCH MORE SEASONED THAN OBAMA

EVEN THOUGH OBAMA WANTS CHANGE HE DOES NOT KNOW THE PLAYERS IN DC WHEREAS HILLARY KNOWS THEM ALL AND WHERE THEY LIVE AND WANT TO BE
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
HILLARY SHOWED HER EXPERIENCE IN THE DEBATE FAR EXCEEDS OBAMA’S EXPERIENCE

HER KNOWING HOW D.C WORKS IS FAR MORE EXTENSIVE THAN HIS.

AS SHE SAID HER BAD BAGGAGE IS OUT IN THE OPEN AND SIFTED THROUGH OBAMA’S IS NOT ALL OUT  IN THE OPEN YET
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
HILLARY ALSO OPENLY AND HONESTLY ANSWERED QUESTIONS  IN PENNSYLVANIA (FAITH AND COMPASSION FORUM)

ALL OBAMA DID WAS GIVE CAMPAIGN RHETORIC AND DID A REPEAT PERFORMANCE.

HE BASICLY REPEATED EVERYTHING HILLARY SAID --- AS HE DID IN OHIO

    OB STUMBLES

I ran to the Chinese Resturant on my way home from work because I didn't want to cook so I could watch the debate.  Hillary was excellent.  Everytime OB was in a pickle he blamed it on Politics.  This way he didn't have to answer the question.  I hope we pulled in some undecided voters because most of OB supporters wouldn't care what he did or didn't do.  They are just infatuated with him.  I can't imagine the super delegates thinking he can win the general election.  If they do, this country is in real trouble.

Finally--honest hard questions to both candidates--and although it seemed Obama was permitted to ramble forever, he was interupted at appropriate times with appropriate prompting to return to the question. These guys did not allow either candidate to elude the questions-- Thanks to ABC for coming through on this one. I know who I am rooting --and it is Hillary Clinton!! I so much want to see her leading this country out of the crisis we are in---She has a plan. We have a vote. And now I feel we have a voice--Hillary was amazingly in charge of this debate tonight and I felt so thrilled to see it shine! Go Hillary---

Hi Elizabeth -  I watched the whole debate - - to sum up:  HILLARY was strong on all issues, she seemed calm, collected, and she firmly answered questions with clear knowledge and understanding.  Her tone showed command and authority, a clear indicator of her strong leadership skills and experiences.  OB, on the other hand, seemed confused, unsure of his answers, and stumbled on most of his responses, and at times seemed to copy and re-phrase HILLARY's responses!!

    • Let her Shine

I have to say that Hillary just gets better and better with each new speaking engagement!  Nothing caught you off gaurd and you just flowed! On the other hand Obama seemed to ramble alot and just talk in circles.  I had the impression he didn't seem to know what to say and just stumbled along. We need Hillaries strong voice in the fall!

by Becky Thomas at 4/17/2008 12:11:45 AM

    Hilary was awesome

Please go to the abc polls and vote for Hilary,  Right now it is 49% Clinton and 51% Obama.

    Hilary Rose, Rise, Hilary, Rise!

    Congratulations!

That was a great job, Senator Clinton. Although I didn't get to see the entire debate, everything I've read so far just says good things!

Good luck! Keep up the good fight!

And to all the other Hillary supporters, please keep contributing. Hillary needs all the help she can get!!

    Thanks!

    West Coast viewers

Lets hear from West Coast viewers.

How was it to hear everything later than the East Coast?

    As good as you thought?

    Good night TEAM HILLARY.

    • Hands Down She's The Winner!!

Taylorgrob...Hey, from California...Just finished watching the debate...Senator Clinton was in command from start to finish...handled the questions well, even the follow-up questions.

Senator Obama...was totally out of his league, stammering, seemed mystified that someone would dare to ask him those questions that spoke to his electability, even the follow-up questions weren't handled well!!  He kept saying these are the kinds of questions that the American people aren't interested in..."spin" for I can't really give you a good answer so let's change the subject.  Actually, these are the kinds of things that must be dealt with, since they speak to his judgement and lack of experience!

I have to hand it to ABC...they addressed alot of the electability questions that are out there about Senator Obama...the very same issues that I believe make him unelectable in November!!  The very issues that the media should have addressed oh, so many months ago...instead of being enamored by him!

All in all, a wonderful debate for Senator Clinton and hopefully, for those undecided voters to make up their mind that Hillary is the REAL change this country is so desperate for!!

      Tomorrow's a new day....RISE  Hillary  RISE!!!
(But first get a good nites sleep...you deserve it!!)

    • California

Definitely worth the wait, I'm in Santa Cruz,CA.  Sen Clinton is SHARP and has superior command of the issues and isn't afraid to say 'I'm sorry' or 'I made a mistake' instead of blaming it on someone else, and then get on with the business of turning this country right side up.

by janeway at 4/17/2008 1:37:43 AM

    • From a West Coast viewer

Hillary was great!  Very poised, knowledgeable, humble, direct and always with a SMILE before she spoke.  They even showed Chelsea with Gov. Rendell, Gen. Clark.  OH, what a night for Hillary Family.

Hillary, you made us proud, stay standing, we're with you all the way from the great State of Pennsylvania onto 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

God bless Hillary!  God bless America!

by Normita at 4/17/2008 1:57:42 AM

      • Really proud

Hillary was utterly Presidential.  Is there any subject she can't handle??  I don't think so.  Nothing flusters her.  What more could you possibly hope for in a President?  She's amazing.  She shimmers!  She did a beautiful job tonight and you could tell it was coming from the very center of her being.  Awesome.

by Susan in WA State at 4/17/2008 2:58:17 AM

    • Checking in from Washington State

She had a standing 8 count twice before he knew it. Hillary dominated this debate.

It's created a firestorm of frustration and outrage from Obama voters.

You know Truth hurts, and it's clear they feel betrayed by the Mass Media actually finally having a challenging debate.

Hillary won it standing and took all the challenges and was the last one standing.

      Obama lost, pure and simple.

by MDriftmeyer at 4/17/2008 3:35:30 AM

    Finally, A Fair Debate

I have to say this was the first Debate I watched where I felt the commentators, Charlie Gibson and George S., moderated a fair discussion.  OB looked stunned with the hardball questions and was weak on the technical responses--taxes, Iran, etc.

Clearly, it was Senator Clinton's night.  She was sharp, detailed and spoke to the issues with commanding specifics.

I hope she blows him out of the water next Tuesday. The Dems have only one choice to win in November.  We saw it tonight.

    Intelligence and More

Hillary was fantastic tonight.  She clearly understands the problems that we are facing today and has the intellectual capabilities to solve these problems.  It will truly be a travesty if we don't elect such a compassionate and intelligent candidate to be our President!

by WVUBen at 4/17/2008 12:27:08 AM

    A Commanding Performance...

The winner hands down!  Hillary had a better understanding than B.O. of the issues, problems and concerns facing our country and the election process and gave clear, specific answers.  She was poised, dignified and she looked great!

    Still praying for Hillary...God Bless.

    She was...

PHENOMENAL!!!  Ahh, she was sooo good tonight!  Completely in control, confident, smart.  Perfect.

My dad doesn't even like Clinton (he's a Republican) and after the opening statements he goes "Oh she's going to do much better than him tonight.".  :)

    AWESOME PERFORMANCE

Hillary was clear, concise, confident and exhibited the leadership qualites needed in a president Hillary proved once again that she knows the issues and what to do about the challenges facing America. It was a clear win for Hillary. Obama should have just stayed home.

Hillary all the way in 2008.

by Veronica at 4/17/2008 12:38:31 AM

    Obama and small towns

I am disappointed in Obama because I am a resident of a small town and I know we are not gun-happy, bitter, and using religion as an excuse. We are hard-working, fair, and diverse in out interests and needs. We do not expect special treatment; we do expect respect. I am tired of a candidate who spends his time insulting people for their way of life without ever saying how he will handle the problems with the economy—not just for the urban poor and his rich supporters-—but for everybody-- or how he will handle problems with healthcare nationwide, or how he will improve education and how he could bring our troops home with dignity. Everybody knows we need change… but right now he has come up with NO specifics about what changes he is talking about… …other than he doesn’t want them made  the “old” way… whatever that means.  Perhaps he should start changing his attitude to small town America. At least Hillary has concrete ideas for the very challenging issues facing the country.

by eveamary at 4/17/2008 12:47:23 AM

    It's Clear!

It's clear that Obama is ill-prepared for this job. He's gotten overwhelming support from his backers, sure, but I think they will see, especially after tonight, that he's more of an eloquent speaker than a change maker. Though tonight, his responses were anything but eloquent. I believe that Hillary can and will close the very small gap with the popular vote, and go on to win the Dem nomination! Yes SHE Can!!

    Ready now. Ready day one.
    Hillary for President!

by JustinShort at 4/17/2008 12:55:47 AM

    GO Hillary

Senator Clinton did a fabulous job and hands down won the debate. She was confident, had full command of the issues, was fair and credible. Talk about Hope--she clearly communicated hope and the ability to honestly take on the real issues.

On the media bias issue that so many commented on--do we think that the conservative media machine is promoting Obama because they think he will be easier to defeat in November or at the very least, will be a one term President?

Clearly, Hillary has been thoroughly vetted for the last 16 years and she knows her way around Washington--she can win against McCain and I'm not sure that Obama can.

Go Hillary!! I'm hoping for great results in Philadelphia and am working for you in Oregon as well.

    Obama calling disabled "mentally deranged"

Hillary you had the best debate I have seen yet.
I want to tell you how I felt when Obama called
people with mental disabilities "mentally deranged".
I feel like he magnified the disability.

We have soldiers coming home from Iraq, they
are fast becoming people with mental disabilities,
and like your fight to help them, and all Americans
with quality health care, we need not be adding
stigmation and labels when we speak of them.

It just showed me how much more Obama is out of touch, and how much more we need you to get this
Country back on track for all Americans.

by elchico at 4/17/2008 1:07:09 AM

    BRAVO!! BRAVO!!

Hillary cleaned Obama's clock. What else is there there to say? Americans need to appreciate and grasp this chance to make Hillary Rodham Clinton the next president of the United States America.

I knew she would win and stay on the high road. Hillary has what it takes to lead the country away from the Bush years and to a progressive future. We must not lose this chance.

Thanks to Hillary Rodham Clinton for proving once again why she is the only choice for America.

by HillaryForever at 4/17/2008 1:09:45 AM

    NO DOUBT

I challenge any thinking person, after watching this debate to not conclude that Hillary should be President of the United States. It is a gift to have someone like her in our country and willing to do this job. One would have to be really foolish to let this opportunity go by. Hillary Clinton our next President.  Endecott Brooklyn, N.Y.

by endecottp at 4/17/2008 1:12:06 AM

    Checking in from CA

I just finished watching the debate (taped) and was so impressed about Hillary's knowledge - her answers had a lot of meat, not generalizations, and remained standing on her positions.

She didn't take Chairlie's bait a couple of times, she never wavered.  That's how a president should be, and Hillary will win!

God bless Hillary!  God bless America!

by Normita at 4/17/2008 1:15:48 AM
