Memo: HRC Strongest v. McCain

by Harold Ickes, Senior Advisor
5/1/2008 1:54:02 PM

A spate of new public polls out this week confirms what we have been arguing for some time: Hillary Clinton is the strongest candidate to beat John McCain in November.

The data shows that Clinton not only outperforms Obama in head-to-head matchups, but is also stronger in the all important subcategories that serve as bellwethers for a candidate’s overall strength.  In addition, new data out today in three swing states vital to Democratic prospects in November show Clinton beating McCain.

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH MCCAIN: In a hypothetical general election match-up with McCain, Clinton wins handily (50-41) while Obama is virtually tied with McCain (46-44), according to the AP-Ipsos poll released Monday.  A new poll from CBS/NYT show Clinton beating McCain by five points (48-43), while Obama ties McCain (45-45). The new Fox poll has Clinton beating McCain by one point (45-44), while Obama trails McCain by three points (43-46). And in Gallup's daily tracking poll, Clinton leads McCain by one point (46-45) while Obama trails McCain by two points (44-46).

SWING STATES: New Quinnipiac polls out today show Clinton dramatically outperforms Obama in the critical swing states of Ohio and Florida. In Ohio, Clinton beats McCain by ten points (48-38), while Obama loses to him by one point (43-44). In Florida, Clinton beats McCain by 8 (49-41), while Obama loses to him by one point (42-43). Hillary also tops McCain by 14 points in Pennsylvania (51-37), while Obama's lead over McCain is in single digits.

CLINTON BEATS MCCAIN AMONG INDEPENDENT VOTERS; OBAMA TIES HIM: The new AP poll has Clinton leading McCain among independents (50-34) while Obama is tied with him (42-42).  The NBC/WSJ poll notes that Obama’s negative ratings among independents are they highest they have ever been.

CLINTON IS THE CANDIDATE VOTERS TRUST WITH THE ECONOMY: The economy is the top issue among voters and is likely to remain so through November. In the CBS/NYT poll, Hillary beat both Obama and McCain as the candidate who is talking about the economy most by a margin of 25% to Obama’s 13% and McCain’s 7%.

OBAMA UNFAVORABLES RISING QUICKLY: In the CBS/NYT poll, Obama’s unfavorables increased by ten points in the last month (24 to 34%) while his favorables decreased by four points. In the CBS/NYT poll, Obama’s unfavorables among independents rose to 31%. The Fox poll shows that in the last two months, Obama’s unfavorables have increased by nine points (33 to 42%) while his favorables decreased by seven points (54 to 47%).  In the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Obama’s negative ratings increased by five points in the last month (32 to 37%) while his positive ratings decreased by three points in the last month (49 to 46%).

CLINTON STRONGEST AMONG SWING VOTING BLOCS: The new AP-Ipsos poll shows Clinton leading McCain among seniors (51-39) but has McCain BEATING Obama (49-38).  She runs stronger against McCain with those under 30 than Obama does, pulling two-thirds of the young vote while Obama gets 55% against McCain. And she wins the Catholic vote against McCain (58-35) while McCain beats Obama (46-43).

    • I thought....

I thought Cuamo from NY is a superdelegate not an automatic delegate.  What is the difference.  Can't seem to understand this delegate stuff just know that Hillary is going to be President.

      by DE4Hillary at 5/1/2008 2:13:27 PM

      • Super = Automatic

Hillary uses the term Automatic, but everyone else seems to use Super.  Either way, it's a great day for Hillary!!

          • NC

I can only imagine how Senator Clinton must feel at this very moment.  I know how I feel as a supporter of hers.
But you know and I know that she will keep on going.  She won Indiana and she has picked up more delegates from both Indiana and N.C.

            Indiana, Thanks!

Now we move on and I hope our Hillary gets a well deserved rest after tonight.

            Hillary you are the best!

            • Houston Voter

She ran a very good campaign in NC and IN with the support of many. I know it was not what you all expected and that is not a reason to feel bad. What we as her supporters can do is to work with unweavering belief that we are doing the right thing for ourselves and for our country. We can not decide everything when a lot of people are involved. But we can decide what is best for this campaign and move forward. With positive attitude, I say she still has a change. Many things are not on her side now. But her faith and belief of what she can do for this country is on her side.

            • North Carolina

It was very disappointing to see Hillary lose in NC.  Hats off to her, her family, and staff for adding Lenoir NC to the tour.  In small town America we are a town that has watched our livelyhood pack up and move overseas creating numerous unemployments as well as entire households losing everything including thier homes.  Mr. Clinton's visit was not only historicial,(the first President ever to stop in Lenoir),but uplifting as well.  Don't quit Hillary, America is full of children who need to grow up with their daddies and I am certainly depending on you to bring my granddaughter's daddy home soon.  Cheers from Lenoir NC

Go Hillary; you are doing great. There's no doubt - - you will take FL & MI in the general.

    • Really? Now?

Finally! I mean I thought I was the only that understood this concept. It's all about the electoral votes! Obama camp keeps saying they have more popular vote, but guess what? They must have not gotten the memo from Gore in 2000 explaining the popular vote is pointless if you don't have the electoral votes needed. You shouldn't need a degree in Political Science to understand this.

    Keep going Hillary!

You're the survivor and the fighter we've been waiting for.

You are the best candidate running for President today.

    Bravo.

by Audrey Regan at 5/1/2008 2:01:34 PM

    • Let's not worry about the superdelegates just yet.

It will be amazing what happens if we win Indiana and do well in North Carolina. The BO bandwagon already has one flat tire and with a few more wins for our gal the wheels will fall off. Just wait until the votes come in from Kentucky and West Virginia.  It will be like rats jumping ship.

We need to keep focused on our goal by donating, calling, e-mailing, blogging and anything else we can think of. Every little bit helps.

Rise, Hillary, rise! Every one of us here are with you every step of the way.

New Quinnipiac polls out today show Clinton dramatically outperforms Obama in the critical swing states of Ohio in Florida.

It should read "swng states of Ohio AND Florida." Replace "In" with "And."

“She is the prayer of every woman, and every man who longs for fair play, healthy families, good schools and a balanced economy.”

God bless Dr. Angelou, Gov. Easley and Hillary!  God bless America!

    • Light our candles!

      I lit candles.

I think I read that someone said you all lit 1000 candles during the Pennsylvania Primary! Is there a goal to light a certain number by the Indiana and North Carolina and Guam Primaries? If so, how powerful!

I'm on to the phones for North Carolina now.

      • Yes! Let's go past 1000 for IN and NC!

Yes- there were over 1000 candles burning bright for Hillary for the PA Primary! We need to keep lighting as many as we can!
Normita--who always reminds us--set a challenge of how many candles to have burning on May 6th!

    • Almost 800 candles burning for Hillary!

Come on fellow HillFans! We need to keep those candles burning and prayers coming throughout this upcoming weekend and through the next primaries!  We had over 1000 candles burning before Hillary's last big win (PA) and we can surely do that again, or even better!  Keep the positive momentum flowing! Can you feel it? I can!

      Light those candles here: http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=...

Don't foget that your candles only will burn for about 48 hours soe you mustgo back and relight them!  All teh more candles and all the more prayers to lift Hillary even higher!

      Let's do this!

      Go Hillary!!!

We need to support Senator Clinton with donations of both time and money.

Indiana needs to have their voices heard and their votes counted!

We are closing in North Carolina....a close call or even a win of any size WOULD BE SO HUGE AND TIP THE SCALES FOR OUR CANDIDATE!!!

As always she does just great!  Taking on The O'Reilly factor was huge!  She needs to go every where she can to talk to folks about what is important to them.

Any chance of an on line town meeting????

Senator Clinton Picks Up 4...Count 'em 4 New Superdelegates!!!

    REALLY GOOD NEWS FROM MSNBC:

"Clinton picked up four more New York superdelegates--all add-ons named at the state's convention, taking place today.

Clinton, a senator from New York, has gotten the vast majority of New York's superdelegate total, buffeting her superdelegate lead, as, of course, New York is one of the most Democratic states in the country. (States get more delegates based, in part, on past presidential voting preference as well as size.) Clinton has picked up 45 New York superdelegates to Obama's one."

This is fabulous!!!  Could always use some good news!!

Yes it will backfire on him!!  How can you endorse a candidate and when that candidate is doing so well just turn your back on her?  I just get so upset with these people but then I think about Hillary and her strength and realize I have to get back on the phone and call, call and call some more. Lite a candle and pray.  Hillary is strong and determined and I am with her all the way to the White House!!!!!

      • Obama is despirate

I think now that Obama thinks he might loose all the next primaries that he is aggressively going after the superdelegates.
Frankly, the polls will get even better for HIllary before Tuesday.  It will be a Hill Day.  Lets see double digits again!

by Ariadne Green at 5/1/2008 5:07:07 PM

      • Super Del Nonsense!

The supers who are going for our opponent and making calls to end this "now" (particularly Mr. Andrews) are not thinking about what is good for our nation, they are only thinking about what is good for themselves and they think they are saving the "Party". Well, I've got news - most of us aren't interested in saving the Party, this is not about the Party, it's about us voting for the PERSON that we believe does have our nation's best interest in mind, the person that has the best qualifications to be our Commander In Chief, the person who has the best plans to turn our ailing economy around, and the PERSON who will be the BEST President. And that PERSON is Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton!!!

I'm not sure what part of that these so called "super" people don't get.

Ok enough of that, let's get back to positive thinking and working hard for each and every vote we can get for Senator Clinton!

America does need that kind of change.

Very unhappy about the lack of loyality from many former Clinton people and this Joe Andrew really bothers me.

by Hairdw at 5/1/2008 2:38:34 PM

    • I e-mailed him about his idea of change....

I sent the following e-mail to Joe Andrew:

      Mr. Andrew,

Evidently, Mr. Obama's slogan of change stands for something different for you than it does for others.  For you, it is to change your endorsement and loyalties.  By calling for an end to this primary process, you are taking a stance less democratic than our DFL party is suppose to stand for.  It is an insult to the voters who have yet to vote, as well as all those who have worked hard for, and stand behind Hillary.  The more that people like you, Howard Deen and Nancy Pelosi call for an end, the more offended her supporters become, and the less likely that we will go to the polls in November and vote for Mr. Obama.  If Mr. McCain is our next President, do not fault Hillary, but rather the ineptitude of the media and DFL party in supporting the stronger candidate, who has more experience, a deeper knowledge of the issues facing our nation and detailed solutions for their resolution, and the support of the traditional DFL core.  A dream is a wonderful thing, but at a time like this in our nation's history, we need to face reality and fight to take our country back.

    A Win in November

I am absolutely convinced, and these polls confirm, that unless Hillary is the nominee, Democrats will not win in November and this will be disasterous for our nation!!

by collegeprof at 5/1/2008 2:39:41 PM

    • I agree with you collegeprof - Sen. Obama is unelectable

And as a Michigan vote, I know no democrat is going to win without Florida and Michigan.

There is no doubt about it, Hillary has all of the momentum now.  I'm looking for a double digit win in Indiana and it will be very close in North Carolina.

    Undecided Voters.....

Hillary we've known this all along and so do your
    Opponents, Non-supporters and the Superdelegates.
This is one of the reasons why they're fighting so hard against you.

I'm going to repeat this again as I did before
the PA election. If Hillary's opponents want to
continue to back stave her and pretend they are
running a clean campaign, go right ahead. Because
what you put out is what you will eventually
receive back, and Hillary doesn't have to lift a
    finger at all.

One thing I surely agree on what Rev Wright said  is, you shall reap what you sow, that's in the bible.

Hillary and supporters hang in there and keep
doing what you're doing to help because it ain't
over. You quys just continue to pray, listen and
watch the miracle of God at work.

I'm a mature voter and I am confident in my choice
    are you?

    Vote for Hillary President 08

    Love you all.

Can't do any more right now except continue to make calls to Indiana.  $ is awfully tight right now 'cause it looks like I'll be losing my job to corporate-wide downsizing and offshoring any week now.

Let's keep the wind at her back everyone.  Even $5 will help.  Even 5 calls will help.  Even 5 positive Hillary blog posts out there will help.  Even talking to 5 people while you're out and about wearing your Hillary gear and pins will make a difference. I know - it worked here in PA.

Go Guam!  We're with you Indiana!  Let's pull a win North Carolina!

      Go Hillary!

And THANK YOU ALL for your tireless work in supporting our next President!

LET'S MAKE HISTORY TOGETHER!  LET'S PAVE THE WAY FOR HILLARY TO 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE!

    Be positive =)

We need to forget about Andrew. Lets keep focus on what we can do to help. Calling, donating and blogging. Email the superdelegates. Maybe some one can post the e mails of the uncommited ones.
I spent the morning writing letters to the editors in spanish newspapers. I also e mail a couple of the superdelegates. The weekend is approaching and we need to get busy with the calls. I got an email that said that's what Hillary needs the most right now. So please, lets concentrate on CALLING!

It's been a while and I missed you. I'm glad to see  your post today. I am proud to see somebody working hard for Hillary from Ohio. Thank you so much for all your hardwork. You will be blessed.

    • STAY FOCUSED AND KEEP EYE ON THE GOAL!

I don't know what happened with Mr. Andrew, but he will have to answer to his constituents for his decision.  I would guess it won't be pretty.

BO is fading and his campaign is going to try to pull out all the stops up until the rest of these primaries.  Hillary has the momentum.  That's why you start to hear that she needs to get out from BO supporters.  DON'T LISTEN TO THEM!  STAY FOCUSED like we did with Texas, Ohio, New Hampshire, and PA.  Guess what?  She won all four states.

I agree okie4hillary - let's stay POSITIVE and FOCUSED and do everything we can to get Hillary the nomination!  Remember, they are going to try to throw everything but the kitchen sink at her, and we need to ignore it and keep going forward.

      RISE HILLARY RISE!

    Oregon

Is doing something awesome. They are planning 88 house parties for Hillary to memorialize the 88 years since women's suffrage. I think all the states should do this. In Oregon they vote by mail so they are also having BYOB parties "Bring Your Own Ballot" so a group can have wine, food and cast their ballots together and then mail them back. I think other states could do something similar with early voting and getting whole groups together to go vote and then encourage others to do the same. Round people up at the grocery stores and malls!

As a native of Portland, I think that is a GREAT IDEA!  Thanks for sharing and hope it goes well.  Are you throwing one of the parties?

by LizMeehan at 5/1/2008 3:29:37 PM

        • Oregon is totally awesome!

Unfortunately, I live in Houston Texas currently because of work issues. There is not enough money in Oregon to sustain Middle class jobs and still be able to afford to live decently. My family and friends all still live there though so I have been very involved in the Oregon primary and getting people to go vote for our girl. It was such a great idea though that I wanted to get other people excited about something similar.

by vargasforhillary at 5/1/2008 3:53:45 PM

I put your idea on all the states that are yet to have their primaries. I certainly hope it catches on.

    Thrown Under the Bus

Some of these DNC SD endorsements are throwing us, the voters, under the bus.  First MI & FL. Second, a total disregard for the voters in the last 9 primaries. Third, the unwillingness to understand that competition within the party is good.

I think it is time to be angry and to start working strongly with Democrats who understand democracy.

It is unbelievable that they punished FL and MI for moving up their primaries and now former DNC members are saying that it is hurting the party to let the remaining 9 primaries play out.

Why do we fight wars to give others the right to vote when we are not protecting the voters in FL and MI?

Full force ahead TEAM HILLARY!  We will prevail.

by taylorgrob at 5/1/2008 2:51:43 PM

    • Speak it!

Couldn't have said it better, myself.  If the DNC was so worried about having the primary process go into June or August, why did they make some of the primaries in June and why did the schedule the convention for the end of August?

On Boston Legal last night, James Spader's character said, "Maybe we need to take a break from Iraq and focus on Democracy here at home.".

      GO HILLARY!

This is such good news.  Sen Clinton's is getting her message accross!  She's working SO hard and deserves all the support we can give her.  I think this close campaign has helped Americans.  It's made the candidates really get out there and see what it's really like in the U.S. and Sen Clinton GETS IT!

I'm glad you met with Bill O'Reilly. Even though America has differences this proved you are listening to both sides. You have worked hard and earned tremendous respect by communicating and staying rational. These are keys to solving our problems.

    Any Minnesota Hillary Supporters here?

Just read this - maybe we should encourage Ms. Larson to endorse Hillary:

It is scarcely a fortnight since Nancy Larson announced that after much agonising — and despite a “heartbreaking” last-minute plea from Chelsea Clinton — her super-delegate vote would go to Barack Obama. Now she is not so sure.

“Our role is to keep gauging and re-gauging what the public wants. Although I’m comfortable with the decision I made, there is nothing to stop me changing my mind,” said this Minnesotan yesterday.

She cited how the controversy of Mr Obama’s pastor, the Rev Jeremiah Wright, “keeps cropping up” and said that his comments over bitter small-town Americans “may bother some voters”, saying: “We have to ask ourselves who will be able to go the distance when it counts in November. We have a big responsibility.”

by Adriane at 5/1/2008 3:00:48 PM

    • Yes

I live in the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota.  If you get me the information I will e-mail or call her post haste. Thanks.

by drbodkin at 5/1/2008 3:57:42 PM

      • Contacting Larson

The best possible thing you could do is to make sure she gets the polling information posted by  Harold today.  That's the electability issue that the super's want to see and that will reassure her that the tide has turned.  I agree a change from Obama to us would be a good coup.

by marsha mcLean at 5/1/2008 4:55:51 PM

    • Nancy Larson's endorsement

Nancy will agonize even more when Obama loses the election in November.  He is on his way down the tubes with the American people, the true judge of who is worthy of being president. If Ms. Larson is asking herself the questions about who can go the distance, I wonder where she is getting her answer from?  Any intelligent person knows the answer is, Hillary can and will go the distance, will get up again and again and can stand tall against John McCain, fight everyday and win the election!  It's a no-brainer, Ms. Larson!!!

by Susan for Hillary at 5/1/2008 4:33:03 PM

    • Three Things When Contacting Super Delegates!

Remember, we want to really point out all the positive things about Hillary as a candidate and why we are all supporting her.  And do not forget what taylorgrob posted earlier after sitting in on a campaign coference call:

Harold Ickes encouraged us to remind SD of three things if we contact them:

      1.  Do not discount the remaining races by making a decision now.
      2.  The public does not know Obama well and more vetting is needed.  The Democrats do not want any surprises in September.
      3.  We need a candidate that can go up against the GOP and McCain and win the "purple" states.

by Undecided But Leaning at 5/1/2008 6:28:54 PM

    • Re: Any Minneosta Hillary Supporters here?

Good point Adriane. Let's light some candles for Ms. Larson.

    • Let me know

I'm in St. Peter (formerly from Duluth) and would be happy to write or call if anyone can offer contact data.  Winning one of "theirs" would be well-timed.  What's the matter with our state, anyway??

Wow!  After starting the day with a defection, it looks like we have now picked up 5 newly committed automatic delegates.  This, plus all of the new polling info, makes for a great day.

    • NEW YORK S/DELEGATS STICKING WITH OUR HILLARY!!

I was a bit down this morning with one of our defections, but hearing the news that New York's superdelegates have backed our Hillary makes me soooooo happy!! I am so proud of her! She continues to struggle on even when others turn their backs on her.  We will win this, just watch!

by PaveyP at 5/1/2008 3:36:26 PM

    Over?

If this race was really "over" like some pundits/Obama supporters would have you believe then why did Hillary win Pennsylvania by 10 points? Why do her poll numbers continue to rise? Why is her base of support expanding with every contest? More importantly what will they say when she wins Indiana and NC?...of course they'll have to get the taste of crow out of their mouths first....

    MR ANDREW'S RESPONSE

MR ANDREW'S CALL FOR SUPERDELEGATES IS GETTING A RESPONSE

Clinton gets two new superdelegates from New York
    5/1/2008, 1:34 p.m. EDT
    The Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton can count on at least two more superdelegates from her home state of New York: Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

A Democrat Committee spokesman says Cuomo and DiNapoli are among four new superdelegates named Thursday when Democrats voted on 95 remaining slots. Four were unpledged.

The other two unpledged spots went to former Manhattan borough president C. Virginia Fields and Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo, of the Bronx.

    Gas tax

Barrack Obama and the pundits are criticizing Hillary by saying that her supspension of the gas tax would only save the average American about $30 over those 5 months. I wonder where they get that figure. It cost me $75 to fill up my gas tank last night, and my husband and I fill our vehicles one to two times a week each. By my estimates, we would save around $250 over the course of those five months. I live in a small community where people have to drive quite a distance to get to work. The nearest Wal-mart is 6o miles away. I have to drive my kids to school and extracurricular activities every day. My daughter, who is only 15, had to get a job to try to save for college, and I drive her to work and back.

Now, think about the truckers. They would probably be saving thousands of dollars over those months. Those savings could mean lower trucking fees and lower grocery prices. I think the effect would trickle down into many areas.

Now, do I think the gas tax suspension is partly political and just a temporary solution to a big problem? Yes, but I also think that Hillary is working on long term solutions and has thought of this as a way to help us all out in the meantime while using some of big oil money to finance the help.

I wish more people would listen to what Hillary is actually saying and think for themselves. Of course Barrack Obama wouldn't see any savings because he doesn't pay for gas at the present time.

by KarlaforHillary at 5/1/2008 3:17:49 PM

    • Suspend the gas tax!

I agree - AND Hillary's proposal to pay for it with a windfall profit tax on the oil companies is the way to go.

I paid $50 to fill up my tank last night, and commute 70 miles each day.  $200 extra might not sound like much to Mr. and Mrs. BO with their $million house, but it sure would go a long way at MY house!

      Go Hillary!
